Allotment Gardening

  • I too am a mini allotmenteer @Wilderbeast 😁
In my garden you can tell which bits have been "used" as beds as they are lighter texture,  under the trees and the bed covered with membrane and slate it's so thick its impossible to dig into. That's why when we removed a shed we put in raised beds, I must admit they are a bit dry for the potatoes @Allotment Boy but we do have a watering system to help with that, and the carrots love it in there.

@Mr. Vine Eye that's really bad!! Can't believe that someone have the gall to do it or that nobody on site wouldn't say something. Thankfully I only need to worry about the squirrel's stealing in my garden.
  • I know, it's nuts.

My neighbour thought that I'd just taken it home to start stuff off in the garden.

And the person involved had told everyone that he'd got it off Facebook marketplace.

Based on what my neighbour had seen. The tunnel must have gone about two or three weeks ago and the rest of it was left stacked up. The shelving then disappeared a week later.

Nothing else had gone when I checked this morning.

But my 4 shelving units that had been on his plot next to the tunnel have vanished 😕

  • @Mr. Vine Eye That is awful for you, and worse is the person is on the same site. Hope you get a resolution & the council chuck him off the site. I have heard of people having "bits & pieces" taken but nothing so blatant as that.

@Mr. Vine Eye surely if it's all proven he'd be kicked off the site.

One would hope so. Do you have an on site committee? surely they could help or do you all rent direct from the council?

Yes it’s all through the Town Council. I have contacted the police as well though.

I have proof of purchase for the tunnel and shelving, photos of the seed trays in use inside the tunnel with my shed clearly in the background - multiple photos of it all throughout the year including when I built it.

Then I took photos of it all on his plot. Let alone it’s right there clearly on his plot now.

    So hopefully there’s enough evidence!

I’ve not seen many down there, not that’s I’ve had much chance to go down. But out of those I have spoken to they were all shocked and said he needed kicking out.

I can only assume that he thought my plot was abandoned, even though it’s winter, lockdowns and very few people have been going - all up for grabs!?

He'd have to be a complete moron to do it if he knew it was still in use, you can see the tunnel from my plot!

  • I know I'm old fashioned but I really miss the days when I started on Allotments with my father. Sometimes people used to leave a fork or spade in the ground when they stopped and knew it would still be there when they came back.  It was a different time I know,  people had less but most respected what was other people's property, without question.

  • @Allotment Boy It felt like that at ours until this happened! If I did forget anything like zipping up the polytunnel door then my neighbour sorted it for me.

I let the trapped sparrows out of his greenhouse.

To be honest I’m not a hugely chatty person, so I’ve mostly kept myself to myself on the allotment. I’m not grouchy...just a bit shy to be honest, always have been. But people have been friendly.

This feels rubbish though. I really don’t want to leave as we had so many plans and we’ve done so much there already, considering we started with a jungle to clear.

Would be hard to stay though if the council just let it slide.

Its hard to know what’s happening as it’s all through email, offices closed with Covid. I’d feel better if I’d been able to speak to someone and been able to gauge their reaction to it - known they were taking it seriously.

    Fingers crossed for a resolution.
