Hi Marlorena I hope yiu don't mind me asking a question but how do you deadhead climbing roses.

Last year with my susie harkness rose I started pinching them off behind the flower head but then the next flowers that came were really tiny! How can I avoid this again?

@Ffoxglove … no problem asking questions here... that's what this sort of thread is for really... so all good..

..what I do with climbing roses at deadheading, is that I don't just pinch off the flower head.. that's a mistake.. you need to take it back to dormant bud in a leaf axle lower down...
..here's a photo of what I mean... this climbing rose has a bud cluster at the top.. when those are finished I will take the stem back to where I've put a white line across if you can see that, it's a bit obscure..... about 8 inches back..just above a leaf axle... sometimes I will take them back much further,.. I might even cut off a foot, or even in some really vigorous roses as much as 2 foot or more.. it depends... but no, don't just pinch off the spent buds..

...first flower on this fabulous old fashioned rose called 'Mme. Lauriol de Barny'.. a Bourbon from the 1860's... a scent to knock anyone out..

    ..'Munstead Wood'.. new bloom..

    'Desdemona'...

    'The Herbalist'.. close up..

Clematis 'Daniel Deronda'... lots of flowers on this.. but I've just managed to save it from attack... more later..

..snails have been attacking the clematis above... it's a case of clematis wilt [...not]..
as it mimics wilt but it's the snails stripping the cambium layer off the stems, which has caused the collapse of at least 2 stems which I shall have to prune back..  I have farmland next to me, so snails are despatched over there to fend for themselves.. if they come back.. so be it.. there will be another lot tomorrow I expect..

Super roses and I love the colours, the Daniel Deronda clematis is stunning and compliments the roses beautifully. I’ve got a Princesses Alexandra of Kent rose that’s about to open fully and I’m really excited about that! The colour and scent is beautiful.
Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late.

'Baronne Prevost'..[damask perpetual 1841].. this is a grandparent of the better known 'Gertrude Jekyll'.. so you may see a similarity.. but there's something about these old roses that simply cannot be replicated..

'Blue For You'.. the scent on this wow'd me today... first bloom, and new to me..

'Vanessa Bell' again.. I am totally in love with this rose..
