Marlorena, I love the way you combine roses of all types and colours with shrubs and perennials - with such confidence and elan. Stunning.
I agree Nollie i love the mixed plants with the roses, mine are spread out and always look lost but i'm starting to change,.

@Marlorena could I ask you advise about how far to plant a rambling rose from a fence. This is a DA Veilchenblau. Is this about the right distance. I have another climber that is less than half and the back stem is pushing against the fence .  Many thanks Pam

@Pam’s Pastures … yes Pam, that's perfect... you don't want it too close to the fence.. it's a pain if you ever need to do fence maintenance...  you will also need wire on the fence to train it along.. and if I'm honest.. this gets to be a heavy rose.. it needs good strong fence support...

@Nollie @Voyagerxp @bullfinch … thanks so much... I shall be happy if somebody somewhere, finds something useful in it...

@Marlorena there are metal brackets attached to the concrete posts with the strongest rubber coated wires attached I could find. So all ready fingers crossed. I love your rose and other perennial combinations, very inspiring.

I used to have Veilchenblau, Pam's Pastures, it was a beautiful colour, I hope it does well for you.

Marlorena, I was looking at your hybrid musks over the page, Cornelia looks wonderful. Please could I ask if you know the rose Francesca and if you have any opinion of it?

@Victoria Sponge... oh lucky you... Francesca is a beauty.. I don't have it, and I've never grown it, so what I say comes from others here in England... it has luxurious foliage, very leafy... it's a large shrub with graceful habit... vigorous and strong stemmed... it could be used as a climber if wanted...  scented of Tea and very much in the old fashioned form...   the blooms do nod on the stem, but in an attractive way..

...you might need to give it some support in early years...

..I do hope you get it sometime... and let us know how it does for you...

..this is a cheat's photo really... at first glance it appears as though it's the same rose rambling all around, but it's actually 2 roses...

..through the glass of my greenhouse, both sides... so blurry.. I am surrounded by roses..

Clematis 'Piilu'  showing both double and single flowers... I do love this clematis..

  • @Marlorena - what lovely photographs! I confess, I'm trying to work out the 'floorplan' of the garden, and struggling to see how it all connects...

I planted an Etoile d'Hollande as a bare root from DA this Feb, and so far, it's looking completely dead. All of the other plants that went in bare root in the same location/time/soil (e.g. a couple of Clare Austins, even a rambling Alberic Barbier & Paul Noel) have started to show leaf, bud, growth and hope...

So, how long do you give roses to "bed in" before knowing that they're not working out?

..an unusual succulent.. Chiastophyllum oppositifolium.. one that prefers moist shade..

Geranium 'Hillary Rendell'..  very similar to Biokovo..

    Desdemona and Anne Boleyn roses...

Rhododendron 'Bloombux'.. if you get box blight, this is a great alternative.. can be clipped and shaped... and loved by bees.. they swarm all over the flowers..

..I only got one in this picture though..
