@Marlorena I just noticed today that my Generous Gardener is starting to grow buds. Exciting! Meanwhile Kew Gardens must have at least 20 and its still only small - the first one just started opening up today. The first bud on Royal Jubilee is just opening now too - can see the deep pink inside.
@Nollie - I didn't think Lady of Shalott was a climber but it was in pots labelled climbing rose, with other DA climbing roses and a little bamboo support like the other climbers had.
@Mr. Vine Eye … I can see your roses are doing brilliantly... of course you made great choices.. 'Lady of Shalott' can be grown either as a shrub or trained as a climber... it's the same rose... lots of Austins can be used as dual purpose roses depending on requirements.. they stick those canes in to show it's being trained as a climber, but you don't have to keep it that way.. it's all according to pruning..
I had it to about 8 x 8 foot and it would have got taller, but I had to move it, so I don't have pictures from this year... this is last summer.. it's one of my favourites roses and I wish I never moved it to be honest..
oh yes, the flowers do open to reveal stamens.. as here.. do consider it if you can, it's a fantastic rose, if you like the colour, which you can see is changeable..
[sorry @Nollie for answering... just in case you weren't around]...
Goodness, no problem Marlorena, you have a much longer experience of the Lady of Shallot than me. I must admit though, I would find it difficult to keep it in a proper shrub form, I would be constantly pruning off very long shoots throughout summer and losing the blooms in the process, so find it easier to let it be what it wants to be. Hard pruning in winter doesn’t work, soon as it starts growing it shoots right back up again.. I also find that the blooms don’t open fully very often, they tend to drop before that.
That may be climate-related with me though @Mr. Vine Eye (my Golden Celebration is doing the same thing) so don’t let that put you off. It is one of the most gorgeous warm, rich colours and is a firm favourite!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
