Lovely thread, makes me want to buy more roses but I must control myself!! I was at my daughters house yesterday and her Louise Odier looks so healthy considering she got it from the “rescue me” area last year at GC. She only got it as her best friend is Louise. Looking forward to seeing it in bloom. Lots of aphids on all her roses but advised rubbing off or a quick blast with the hose and await those ladybirds 🐞
..thanks @debs64 nice to see you... that's a great rose, I also picked one up earlier that was reduced, and it's looking good if very small... it has a nice scent so I've placed it near a seating area..
We already have our first trip to DA planned for early June. My barrels are all set up ready for my selection and daughter wants Boscobel and looking for a climber as she has 8 fence panels to cover! She has compassion and Paul’s scarlet (another rescue) so is thinking of a pale pink. Scented and healthy any recommendations?
@edhelka asked if I could show how I've arranged one of my smaller beds of roses.. so here are some photos of a bed which is approx. 15 foot long by 4'6'' wide..
It's backed by a low 3 foot fence, so no climbers or ramblers.. I have instead a 'Desdemona' hedge against the fence... but I deliberately left gaps for infill planting, which I have done with Penstemon 'Westminster Belle' and Verbascum 'Violetta'..
The other 2 roses used are 'Munstead Wood' and 'Anne Boleyn'... this is where it can get expensive because with smaller roses like these it's best to plant in groups of 3... one plant on its own would get totally lost amongst perennials.. I separate the two roses with one of my favourite perennials Anthemis 'E.C. Buxton'.. I also use common Chives and perhaps most important of all... Verbascum 'Flush Of White' which is mixed in with the roses.. I love these plants for their long blooming season..
Here's another example of a rose in a group of 3.. this is 'The Herbalist' a David Austin rose... I could leave just 1 in and let it grow bigger, but I need to keep them short with pruning, so a group of 3 is needed to make it look bushy and as one, for this position..
Hi Marlorena, I can just fit in one or two more roses in the bed. Would like a pastel pink rose single stalked, highly fragrant, long lasting for cutting and non stop flowering. I know it’s a tall order, but can you think of one for me please. It can have first class manure, continual TLC in south devon. Val
Wonderful thread @Marlorena thank you for sharing your beautiful garden
@edhelkaDesdemona really is one of the best DA roses... It has beautiful delicate creamy white petals with a hint of apricot. If you ever visit DA they have planted perhaps Desdemona more than any other rose

...this is the border as of now...
Verbascums are planted close to roses so they rise up between them or amongst them..
I like them to rise up between canes and bushes... so I have lots of them...
Munstead Wood is centred 2 foot apart... Anne Boleyn a bit less, about 18 inches..
..other plants I use are Linum perenne 'Album' [white flax] and a few plants of Lavender Hidcote right at the front for a dark purple injection...
