I'm absolutely hooked on viewing this thread now! I dint think I'd ever leave the garden if I had a selection of roses like these! I'm after a rose recommendation please Marlorena. I'd like a repeat flowering, scented, climbing VERY red rose. Do you have any suggestions please? It's for a sunny spot against a wall. Many thanks. 😊
@Marlorena , I see you noted above that you grow Zephirine Drouhin as a rambler. How on earth do you manage that? Mine has very stiff stems and not a lot of them. After 6 or 7 years has still only reached arch height (7ft?). Is the soil the answer? I suspect so, as ours is deep clay, on a south facing lawned slope (very possibly sub-soil even from when the house was built). I'm intrigued.
@Paul N, this thread is effectively a blog by Marlorena about her rose garden. Whilst we are all welcome to contribute with comments and queries, it is not an appropriate place to brag about your travels in America.
Oh dear, I do beg your pardon. I initially mention the US and the Rockies as I had the most unusual rose, Rosa bicolor 'Austrian Copper' which I thought might be of interest to rose lovers. I'm sure if I was being 'inappropriate', Marlorena would have said something. A slow news day in Girona, Nollie?
Wow! I've always had helpful advice and nice comments on any thread from Marlorena. I'll going to be a lot more careful about where I dare to post now I know there is such an unfriendly response from someone that didn't even start the thread! Guess that's you told Paul N!! A shame.
...thanks all... @Nollie …no probs.. I know it was meant well... @Paul N that's ok... I've been to LBH too!..
@WonkyWomble .. thanks so much... I have barely started yet... lots of my roses don't really come out until late May... For a red climber, the one usually recommended with scent to match is of course 'Etoile de Hollande'.. and that's probably the one you should go for... I grow one called 'Gruss an Teplitz'.. but you do have to accept some black spot pressure... a highly scented red climbing rose that is disease resistant is a tough call...
..there are many more to choose from if scent is not an issue... which personally I find a bit boring in red roses... I feel they just must have scent don't you?...
@Lizzie27 … Lizzie,.. I train my 'ZD' on a fence using wires... it's part of what is termed these days a 'Fedge'..[fence/hedge combo]… I just let it ramble along through everything else.. it is only about 7 foot tall but a width now of about 10 foot.. ..this photo is from last year... I'll post a recent one in a day or two... but you can see how I let it ramble and drape...
Marlorena, you have done it again! 😊 the first rose you mentioned 'Etoile de Hollande' is one my mother had on her house, it will be perfect!!! And yes...a scented rose is a must! 😊 thank you so much for your help and advice, I'm really grateful.
Progress report. Phoned a lovely little local nursery called Katies garden and they have the in stock, in pots, in bud at £8.99 each!!! 😀it just so happens that it's their late evening opening hours today and as My car is in the garage tomorrow.....well you know where I'm off to once the traffic has died down!!
..that's a good price... difficult to beat... and I just knew it was the right rose for you...
...I can see your French is doing fine.. another beautiful rose too and will complement the one you are getting..
I love roses when they are at this stage.. they promise so much - don't always deliver mind.. 'Marie Pavie'.. a little polyantha rose.. although it can grow quite substantial over time..

'The Herbalist'.. named because of its resemblance to rosa gallica 'Officinalis' the Apothecaries rose..
.first flower on 'Anne Boleyn'... a most floriferous and quite dainty shrub rose with small foliage..
..part of my garden is sunken from the property.. nice to look down on things..
Clematis 'Daniel Deronda' from above..
penstemon 'Westminster Belle'... hardy, early to flower.. drought tolerant.. this is just my favourite penstemon..
Geranium x cantabrigiense 'Hillary Rendell'... similar to 'Biokovo'.. these go so well with roses of all types..
Souvenir de Madame Leonie Viennot.
