I shall look forward to seeing yours in bloom next year :) Interestingly, of my darker roses, Darcy Bussell and Munstead Wood got far less blackspot this year and still have most of their leaves, despite the heat. Presumably because it was much drier too. If there is space I might try an MW in the new border. It should be kinder than my hot border, where it is sheer cruelty to roses!

Had first afternoon in the garden for a while now.

Moved Kew Gardens closer to the house and took a few Rose cuttings.

Butchered Queen Elizabeth - decided that I didn’t like her at all and couldn’t be bothered to move it for replanting, so she’s just gone.

I also divided some Geraniums for the first time. Got 4 Biokovo from the little 9cm one I planted in June. Cambridge - I got big bit back in the ground, 4 in pots and about 10 in pots of water on the windowsill because they were only small bits with little roots. So I’m hoping to pot them when they’ve grown some more root.

They’ll be going in around the roses in the border.

....you can also just pull off small pieces and plonk them straight into the ground.. they nearly always root easily and soon take off... something children could do and get involved with I think as they offer a quick result..

...anyone ordering more roses this winter?.....   here is  my list so far.... it's short but I get a few more in early March - discounted Austins...  and a few in May...

    'Commandant Beaurepaire' [Bourbon]
    'Mrs. Paul' [Bourbon]
    'Sally Holmes' [Shrub/climber]
    'Chawton Cottage' [climber]
    'Liverpool Hope' [modern HT]
    'Duchesse de Brabant] [Tea]
    'Midsummer Night's Dream' [modern shrub] [x 2]
    'Souvenir de St. Anne's' [Bourbon]

I calculated how much are my plans for this winter going to cost (something like 15 roses, several big pots and an obelisk or tuteur... and I am not counting new compost, manure, topsoil and mulch) and I think I need to keep it down a bit. Also, I am seriously behind with autumn garden jobs, I have over 250 bulbs that need to be planted and I don't have the beds prepared yet. Making the space for new roses means moving some plants to different spots and removing some others completely... a lot of work to do and it's raining every day.
Anyway, the order from TCL was for these roses (but I still haven't received the payment request and instructions so starting to get worried slightly):
    'Lavender Dream' [modern shrub]
    'Astronomia' [modern shrub, Meilland]
'La Belle Rouge' [floribunda/modern shrub, Vissers]
    'The Prince' [older discontinued Austin]
    'Purple Lodge' [modern shrub]
    'Blackberry Nip' [modern HT]
I want to do an order from Trevor White but the only rose I am 100% decided about is 'Souvenir de St. Anne's'.
Other roses, I am almost decided but will leave the final decision for the beginning of November.
  • I have already put in an order from abroad of Austin’s which included:

    jubilee celebration
    tranquility
    grace
    royal jubilee
    Mary rose
    the lady’s blush
    the Shepardess
    windrush
also a dozen for pots which I already have in the garden!

but I also have the beginning of a list of other roses that I want as well as some climbers and ramblers:

    margaret merrill
    mister lincoln
    just joey
    queen of Denmark
    ballerina
    Tuscany superb
and also I was seriously considering Liverpool hope as well

    ghislaine de feligonde
    etoile de hollande
    bathsheba
    phyillis bide
    blush noisette
    malvern hills
    aloha
    tess

rough idea atm but still to decide later on!!

All the pink ones stated on my earlier list
    Golden Beauty
Both The Prince and Astronomia have been on and off my list...

For me, it’s also about which roses I am binning and which to relocate to less exposed locations in the hope they will do better out of fierce afternoon sun and which ones I am going to bin - night of the long knives for many austins!

@edhelka, don’t worry about TCL payment, they should invoice you when they are ready to dispatch, but send them a reminder about your order after the 15th Oct. I have found they need a bit of geeing up

@Nollie I am only worried because of the timing and possible Brexit problems. Hopefully, it will be fine. BTW I was checking Peter Beales website yesterday and noticed that they still have potted Ivor's rose in stock, in their 50% off sale. I am not sure if they ship potted roses internationally... you probably know better.
I binned this rose yesterday, a NoID very thorny and disease prone HT. A photo for rememberance

@Marlorena , you've probably told us before, so apologies if so but are you going to put all those roses in pots or in the ground?   If in the ground, how do you deal with rose replant sickness please? I ask because I want to dig up an old rose and plant another in it's place - I don't have much spare space!

Thanks for the info about the Beales sale @edhelka but unfortunately, even with the discount, the cost of shipping a single potted rose here is prohibitive, at £28! I will wait until there is an offer on bare root, I think!

TCM sent my roses out without invoicing me last year, and gave me one free when they finally did. They can be a bit chaotic, so it’s still probably worth an email so they remember the Brexit thing.

Yesterday, I hoiked out two hideously diseased HTs I inherited. No wonder they were poorly, they were planted over compacted building rubble and the roots were all twisted and deformed!
