Such beautiful pictures!! It’s definitely going to be first on my list next season! By the way with regards to blackspots, I know Marlorena and I have had this conversation before, some of my roses have started to develop them again having been pristine for a good few weeks since my last big prune, should I just leave them alone and accept there will be some imperfection? When should I start doing something about it; like taking off the infected leaves and potentially spraying?

@celcius_kkw … it's pointless spraying already infected leaves... they won't get any better... so the choice is yours as to how much you can tolerate.... if it's only minor I leave them on.. the rose still needs them.. but if it's worse than say 50% I might remove them...

  • @Marlorena I see, so dpraying is mainly for prevention then? Also, some of my roses seem to have produced a lot of flower buds but they appear to have slowed down with the actual bloom, could this be due to lack of nutrients ie should I start fertilising them again?

...yes you spray to prevent, so spraying for those who do it, should start about April time and continue throughout the season..
...the weather is cooling, the nights drawing in, shorter days.. buds will take longer to open this time of year...  however you can liquid feed, a little and often.. I'm still doing that as there's lots of time left for flowers.. but I shall stop before the end of the month... you should stop feeding roses about 6 weeks before you expect a first bad frost... which for me is usually first week November..

  • Got it. :) it was a lovely mild and calm morning today. I fertiliser my roses and watered them with some tonic as well.

New buds are popping up from munstead wood, royal William, sceptr’d isle and desdemona. 😊

...such perfect roses... catalogue worthy almost.. I can see you're adept with pots..

...is anyone ordering more this autumn?  which ones ?...

I love to see so many different gardens and styles of growing roses - from dedicated rose borders to mixed cottage borders and roof garden.

I plan to do an order from Tuincentrum Lottum. But it may be tricky to time it, according to their website they will be shipping bare roots from 15th October and obviously, it would be good to receive them before any Brexit problems. But I am not sure if I can plant bare roots in late October, with our mild climate here, I am afraid it could wake them from the dormancy before the winter really starts.
I am not sure which ones I want yet but with their prices, it will be hard not to buy too many. I am seriously thinking about The Prince - it's almost impossible to get and they still have it, and I like the colour more than any other red/purple Austin. And also thinking about Francine Austin.
  • @Marlorena I’m still a beginner but you have honestly helped me out so much with your rose wisdom! I can’t wait to see what they look like next year too :)

I think I’m going to go easy for now with my rose purchases.. my bank account would certainly thank me for that. That said, I do have a list of roses drawn up for next year already..

@edhelka I also have the same conundrum about planting bare roots in autumn/winter.. it’s tempting to do it in autumn to get a head start with rooting but scared of it being too fragile to withstand the winter frost..
  • Lovely photos celcius_kkw

My roses look like they're just about to start their second flush.

Malvern Hills has thrown out a lot of sideshoots with flower buds.
Rhapsody in blue - after sitting there doing nothing for nearly two months, after its first flush, has suddenly doubled in size and is covered in good sized buds
Royal Jubilee has lots of buds
Kew Gardens is flowering again and growing some tall canes

  • I’m also looking at tuincentrum lottum for October too! So have a similar problem!

im thinking of going for Anne Boleyn, grace and royal jubilee!
i like the look of them and have a few spaces to fill in the borders.
