Sorry the picture is not very accurate... Their is a terrace garden with a 4 foot height difference so the hole shouldn't be an issue. Just to give a little context the acer in the picture is roughly 8 feet higher than the base of the tree
Highways own it... But no preservation order. I'm allowed to prune so I guess growing a rambler would be OK. Im just sounding advice atm as I know it's far from a straightforward project
The trunk is so ugly. Wish they planted a more attractive less invasive species back at the the turn of the 20th century!!
I thought so... I know what you mean, it would be nice to brighten that up... there may be health and safety issues, I'm not sure.. but if you want to try I would look at a rose like 'The Pilgrim', to 12 foot or so and no more.. I wouldn't be planting one of those tree climbers that ramble to 40 foot.. I would want to make sure it was kept under control, which means tying to the tree, might need ladders?.. something bright but not invasive..
There was a huge white grub thing curled up inside the flower this morning - any ideas what that might be? I should have taken a photo but I was too busy squeamishly throwing it as far as I could over the fence! Actually, if you zoom in, there’s another bug on its way in too. Does it look like anything that might decimate my rose? It’s also under constant attack from greenfly - popular plant!
I only planted it in the ground this Spring and it’s got around 30 buds on it - very exciting...

Gertrude Jekyll, with close-up, leaves are a bit holey and found a huge, pale green caterpillar munching a bud yesterday:
Darcy Bussell coming on, the spotting on the leaves is from rain followed by sun and blackspot is also starting:
Hurrah! First bloom of new Wild Rover - only faint scent detected but looking lovely:
