….there's very little wrong and nothing to worry about at all... crisping of lower leaves is normal this time of year, just pull them off... and if you don't like those leaves with black patches just pull them off too.. it won't hurt the plant...but personally I would just leave them... ...roses rarely have perfect foliage... you will always be faced with some blemishes here and there...
..best of luck, it's a lovely rose to be given as a gift...
Hi all not posted for some time. Roses have been a bit hit and miss for me this year. First flush was good but quite sparse to date and blackspot is quite bad this year. I hope everyone is still loving their own roses. Planning ahead for havenext I havr quite a large 120 litre terracotta pot to fill and naturally I was thinking a rose grown as a specimen. Bit of a tricky north west facing position and needs to be pink through purple or even crimson to stand out against a white coloured wall. Oh and ideally will flower for ever and smell like heaven haha. Any suggestions would be appreciated
First time posting pictures of my blooms here, I first started planting roses in June and these are the first blooms since they’re potted (minus the ones they came in already)
The poet’s wife in particular has done so well, it has an extra special place in my heart given it was the first plant I ever bought.
also my Queen of Sweden has produced its second flush of flowers which appear to have a rather deep orange hue to it. The flowers it came with initially were more pink but the new buds have produced something much deeper in colour.
In order: Claire Austin, The Poet’s Wife, Queen of Sweden, and lastly a patio rose that I don’t know the name of as I threw away the tag. It has an attractive pastel pink colour which fades to pure white as it ages. Any ideas?
@Jason-3 Mate aren’t you looking for like the perfect rose ever? 😛 I’ve got three red roses: munstead wood, Etoile De Hollande (climber) and Royal William which is a hybrid tea. I think for a statement plant maybe a hybrid tea like royal William is good? It’s upright and each flower is large, and it’s very fragrant too.
Here is a picture of it when I first potted it.
Im interested to see what others here might suggest.
...such lovely roses.....I'm not familiar with Royal William... such views across rooftops! I would sit there plane spotting.. ... NW facing is a difficult site Jason... 'Scepter'd Isle' is almost the perfect rose, at least from year 2... but it's pink not purple... 'Comte de Chambord' is another... I have both of these N to NE to NW facing... both have strong scent and continuous - perpetual - bloom...
...your little patio rose may be 'Gentle Touch'.. but too early to say at this stage.. that would be my provisional guess...
@Marlorena ha my partner actually loves plane spotting and the terrace is perfect for that. We can also see the ships that come in from the Irish Sea into the Mersey channel as well.
I have more more pictures of my patio rose if it helps:
The last picture is what it looked like when I first bought it. I starts off pastel pink then goes almost completely white as it matures.
@celcius_kkw ...yes, I still see that as 'Gentle Touch'... I grew it back in the 1980's and that's how I remember it... the only others I can see similar are 'Lovely Bride'.. 'Greenalls Glory' and 'Special Friend'.. if any of those names ring a bell, but I don't think they are right..
...I love plant spotting.. I sometimes watch Big Jet TV on you tube...
I have to admit I did not recognise the Merseyside skyline...
I don't have many Hybrid Teas but I do love this 'Chandos Beauty'... the scent is wonderful, sweet and sumptuous.. this is the 2nd flush, it does take a while to rebloom...
..in very strong sun today... ..like most roses this time of year, it does blackspot on the old foliage which it wants to drop, so you remove by hand... sprays are futile right now... leaving way for this gorgeous fresh foliage, all nice and clean...
...this rose is new to me... it's 'Amethyst Star'... also known as 'Special Brother' I think it is.. ..I have it potted, north facing in shade, but it does get sun early from the East and later from the West.. purple roses do best out of strong sun... ...it doesn't look much right now, only one bloom as I moved it to this pot earlier as it wasn't happy where I had it... but it's full of buds, and as you can see completely healthy - no sprays... it's also thornless which is such a welcome bonus... it will get much taller than this.. and to top it all, a sweet scent to go with it... not overly strong, but enough...
