I have an unidentified climber with more evil thorns than stem . I prune it with loppers and heavy gloves and stand well back as the branches fall!
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Hi @emsgrdn, lovely roses and fantastic garden, great to hear about your climate. Do keep posting more as the season develops.

A lot of my roses are about to flower, but I am away for a long weekend so will miss many of them, doubtless!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

I'm quite sure it's not 'Reines de Violettes' as I have that in another bed. Her blooms have been quite a bit smaller of late. I'm in zone 7a. I have some roses (not DA's) on their own roots, the rest are DA's and I actually have no idea what rootstock they use. I'm patiently awaiting 6 old roses from High Country Roses in Denver, CO that sells all of their roses as own roots (from cuttings.)  I'll be getting: Boule de Neige, Victorian Memory (Isabella Skinner), Baronne Prévost, Souvenir du Président Lincoln, Morden Snowbeauty and Marchesa Boccella (Jacques Cartier). I would love to know your thoughts/tips on these as I have never grown them before. I'm a little leary about where I will be planting these as they will be in my perennial borders which borders a lot of lawn. What I worry about is black spot coming from me watering the lawn with sprinklers so nearby.

I am praying that the woman in Paradise who lost all of her 2000 roses will have a miracle of a few more new sprouts. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have so many roses and then lose them.

I can't figure out why half of my above post is red like a link?

@emsgrdn I am sorry that your rose got almost lost in my IDing debate, it's a beautiful rose and I would love to know what it is. I love purple roses and spent most of February and March obsessing about them, trying to choose some :) My first thought was Hippolyte but you said it repeat flowers and I am bad with this IDing business (I don't have the eye for details). Please post more photos later in the season, I am sure someone will be able to ID it. There aren't many roses with this colour.

@Jason-3    Monty Don has that rose against a wall Jason... it's best grown in shade of a north wall... something to do with the colour bleaching in full sun..

@emsgrdn   oh ok, I thought you would be at least zone 8, so you must get coldish winters there..  I'm pretty sure DA grafts onto Dr Huey mostly for your area but in warmer parts of U.S. they graft onto Fortuniana, especially for Florida.. they also do own roots I think, I'm not sure..

Some of your roses are not available here in England... I have 'Baronne Prevost'.. this Damask Perpetual grows so well in So Cal, as due to the dry heat it doesn't blackspot... over here it gets what is called Damask Crud, and it's pretty horrific... after the main flush fortunately.. it doesn't bother me, I just pick the leaves off and then it grows fresh ones...  if you get a hot summer it should repeat for you.. perpetual... but it takes time to establish a rhythm... mine doesn't repeat much so far, but it blooms for a long time as a main flush..  I grow it as a climber.. it's full of character though despite her faults..

Jason-3  I have two Souvenir du Dr Jamain, one is a cutting from the original. The upside is beautiful deep dark red flowers with a good perfume, with a repeat flush.  The downside is tall lanky growth and, as you have read, blackspot prone.  You definitely don't want to grow it in full sun as the blooms will soon crisp.  You can grow as a climber but I think this draws attention to the awkward growth and any blackspot.  I grow them at the back of the border where their legs are covered up by other plants and where they don't get too much sun.

    I don't have anything blooming yet...   : (
I just got minerva rose delivered. I thought I'd ordered a potted rose but it's bare root. Will it be okay?
