Sorry @Nollie I didn't get the competition rules! I've been in seville so havnt been checking in. Beautiful city.

In other news... BAKKER who accidently sent me the wrong rose instead of beautiful Minerva have no more Stock to send a replacement!!! I'm not happy as have spentweeks waiting for delivery the first time only to find the rose was pink and scentless... then weeks waiting for a replacement. Only when I rang them did they tell me they had no stock. Grrr. I wouldn't have ordered with them at all if it wasn't for that rose!!!

New flower in the tiny tangle ... GLORIANA

  • Hi guys

Sorry to revisit the subject of pot size again: I have been searching for pots that are minimum 18x18 inches in size at various garden centres and online and it’s been impossible to find one. The only ones that are huge cost over a hundred quid each which in my mind is rather hefty, oh and they’re massive!

Where do you guys get your rose pots from (that is 18inches deep)?
Also does the diameter matter as much as the height of the pot?

Currently my roses are in pots that are roughly 40x36cm as these are the largest ones I could find in my garden centre. I wouldn’t mind them not reaching their full growth potential but would they die if they stop having enough space to grow? Or would they simply remain that size proportionate to the pot but still continue to bloom etc?

..do you not have a discount store near you?   like this one...
    https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/garden-centre/planters

..there are any number of cheap pots on that link suitable for roses, either in the short or longer term....  there is no need to use expensive glazed or terracotta pots...

...even b and q have quite a few suitable... I rarely pay more than a tenner for a pot..

    Hi Marlorena

Thanks for replying. I have indeed looked at B&Q, Dobbies, eBay and Amazon before but honestly couldn’t find one that matches that dimension. I also didn’t want to buy a flimsy plastic one for aesthetic reasons.

Ive looked at the link you sent me and one of them seems to be 18 inches deep but only 11 inches in diameter at the top (and even smaller at the bottom as it tapers). Does the diameter of the pot matter to roses or is it just the height I need to pay attention to? In al honestly I have yet to come across an exact 18x18 inches pot anywhere (given this is the dimension most rose experts recommend) despite extensive research (I’ve spent days and days honestly). I have already spent almost 200 pounds on pots alone and they don’t even fit the bill exactly (with the height being only 14 inches). Surely I am not the only person having this much trouble finding a suitable pot ?! I mean it should have been about planting roses not finding a bloody pot lol!

    Warm Regards
    Adrian

Phew, bet that was hot, @Ffoxglove! Seville is lovely, I prefer it to Granada, actually.

Nothing much on the rose front from me just now (they have all downed tools in the heat) but I’m enjoying the rose porn provided by everyone else!

...I know what it's like Adrian... when you want something exact, you can never find it..
..you can compromise and change the size... I have several roses in pots just 12 x 12 inches.. decorative glazed pots.. not expensive... now I buy the lightweight ones made of some resin material..
...Primrose have some nice pots, but they may be more expensive than you want to pay..
    I like this one which is 19 x 19.. but it's £40...

..this one below I got from Dobbies, but I think it was £20.. I go cheaper these days, but I have several of these with roses in them.. although I've put 18'' x 18'', it's actually from the outside rim.. internally it's 15'' across..

of course you may not like this type of pot..
Here are some others I have... I'm not concerned about aesthetics with pots, more concerned with manageable weight, as I might repot some of them every other year..

..this 'Chandos Beauty' rose is in a pot just 12 x 12''...

..as is this 'Midnight Blue' rose...

..this 'Minerva' rose is in a square metal pot 15 x 15''... I have several of these, metal and plastic type..

fancy decorative pots tend to be expensive...  hope you find something you like eventually... try not to worry too much about the exact size..

Seville was hot @Nollie but worth it!
Now I'm back to my roses and Finally my new chandos beauty is in flower and my compassion.

On a side note just another warning about bakker and their terrible service. ..
Wish I'd read this before ordering with them.

    Terrible reviews including mine!
  • @Marlorena Thank you so much! The primrose container seems to fit the description! I can’t believe I’ve missed it before (I have tried primrose and wayfair before too.

I need two more containers for an attempt to grow climbing roses so these would be great.

Also would roses die die if they’re grown in smaller pots? Or would it just restrict its potential.

In in terms of fertilising potted roses, what do you use (liquid or granules) and how often do you do it? I read potted roses need more frequent fertilising but How often is often? The fertiliser instructions tend to say once few months but it would seem to me that is for those planted in the ground rather than pots. I don’t want to overdo it and burn the roots either.

Lastly may I just thank you once again for taking the time to find those suggestions. You and @Nollie have been so incredibly helpful.
  • Not sure if I should post this here or start a new thread but I wonder if I could have some help with this rose’s ID. IT was the first rose that i ever bought from Dobbies but being a beginner I naively threw away the label. It does have a lovely sweet fragrance to it and I wonder if it might be poet’s wife? Interestingly although all the flowers are yellow one turned out to be very pale in comparison to the rest. Both of the flowers in this picture arise from the same cane so it can’t be a sucker surely?

This is what the flowers looked like when I first bought them
