I really want Gabriel Oak, but doubt it would do well here, so I have managed to resist, so far. If I can last until after the DA 15% discount runs out I should be ok...

The Telegraph list seems a slightly odd selection, @Lizzie27, but rose choice is so individual. A few on here grow Summer Song, I am sure, but can’t remember who...

Nollie, the dangerous time is going to be in spring, when the new Austins are released :) I've been also thinking about Gabriel Oak.

I've just sent my order from Louis Lens:
    'Jacqueline Humery' (hybrid musk)
    'Empereur Charles IV' (modern shrub)
    'Olivia Rose Austin' (DA)
    'Purple Skyliner' (climber)
    'Claire Jolly' (hybrid musk)
  • One of my favourites for foliage is Mortimer Sackler, and after the flower cripiness problems I had with it this year, the foliage was actually the main reason I wanted to keep it.

It's a lovely shade of green and the leaves are a nice pointed shape. I don't think I've got any photos just showing it.

My next favourite is Malvern Hills, again for the shape and they are olive green. Then Ghislaine de Feligonde, small pretty leaves - different shape to all the others.

...just catching up... I had a -3 the other night after all.. it wasn't forecast for my area but I have found that BBC Weather is not to be taken seriously ...

....yes 'M Sackler' does have lovely foliage... I  might post a photo later as I have one of it..

@edhelka    nice selection of roses from Lens...  I love Purple Skyliner and wish I had it back again.. it's so much better than 'Veilchenblau'... apart from a few thorns..
...sometimes I like Just Joey and other times I don't...

@Victoria Sponge  I like your Hot Chocolate.... one hears a lot about it.. and I have a picture of Celestial in bloom... so might post it later.. lovely foliage again on William Lobb.. I love the grey green leaves on some of the old roses...

@Lizzie27   ...     I quite liked Summer Song.. except the orange blooms turned pink around the edges which didn't appeal to me so much... and a bit floppy as a plant... large leaves...   Dame Judi has lots of  big thorns..  I don't know the others you list..

...my roses from Roseraie Ducher will be arriving today... it takes 4 working days.. I should have ordered Sunday or Monday for delivery Friday... but mid week order meant they have waiting around all the weekend in transit... but they should be alright..  Euros 16.90.. about £14 for delivery.. it used to  be about a tenner..  so quite a bit more than local vendors here..
..at least it's a timed delivery with DPD.. I like this courier very much...

..here are my roses...   it's actually 16 euros delivery, otherwise the prices per rose are similar to Beales or Austin..      Ducher advises graft union level with soil...

    ...I love this moment...

...all good grade A roses... with wet soil around the roots.. and a French worm or two, so they went on the soil..

..you also get these nice labels for each rose...

    ..I don't think I'm quite finished yet …

And the order from Louis Lens is being shipped today. Fast service.
BTW I noticed interesting thing on my invoice - a very low tax. I looked into it and roses are in a reduced VAT rate in Belgium, a category where usually things like basic food and children stuff are. I like that :)
I paid €23.30 for shipping but their roses are relatively cheap, on average between €10 and €12.

@Marlorena I've thought you still have Purple skyliner. When did you removed it and why?

@edhelka … no, I no longer have it unfortunately... I had to remove some roses for some essential building work as they were in the way, and I didn't have time to think what to do with them...  it repeat flowers into October...

...looking forward to seeing your Lens roses...    do you have 'Stanwell Perpetual'?  I meant to let you know about it, as it's a hybrid Spinossisima that didn't sucker for me.. and it flowers into autumn... beautiful rose.. prickly..

...incidentally, regarding 'Gabriel Oak'... I don't know if any of you are on Instagram, but David Austin Roses put up a photo of this rose and it had 6,300 likes and nearly 250 comments...  I do hope they still have some left by next March as I need another one...

...it's taken me some time to like Instagram and to discover how to use it... I failed twice abysmally... I check out Monty Don.. he usually puts something up each day, and Nick Bailey.. mr Hunk.. as he seems to enjoy taking selfies of his muscles...  well... if you've got it, flaunt it I suppose....
...quite a few other rosy pages I look at....  I don't know why people bother to ask them questions as they rarely answer...

I was thinking about 'Stanwell Perpetual' at one point but decided it's too big. Or at least it was for the location I was thinking about at that time. Maybe I will get it one day, I like it, but it's on my "one day maybe" list that's already very long :)
I used Instagram for work and hated it - too much of like for like and follow for follow, faking interest etc. - that's what it is if you want to get really high numbers, it was soul-destroying for me. But I am thinking about doing a personal account for my gardening, not only roses. I think I would like it without the pressure of making it successful and gaming the system, just a simple genuine sharing of photos with similarly minded people.
You still need to expect that professional like Monty Don or plant nurseries use hired help to manage social media, scheduling and managing software and similar things, often not having resources to really interact with people there. Which is a wrong way how to do Instagram, it's built on nonstop interactions and people want to interact with businesses there. Some companies are better at this than others.

How far apart should I plant David Austin roses? Not concerned about height much, but do they grow to around same width as mentioned in the DA website.

I have a very long border, around 100 ft and quite a lot of roses but I cant do the group of three due to border width constraint, so it would be in one line. I will try to plant different heights next to each other, so hopefully it doesnt look like a rose hedge as such. Any other ideas how to make it look more natural and not hedge like... May be plant 3-4 next to each other, then a gap for some other shrub...
