Hi @Janie B, lovely Shropshire Lad, a word of warning about Rozanne... great long flowering season but it can be an absolute thug (becoming one here). Unless I am imagining things or read it somewhere else, I am sure Marlorena mentioned somewhere its not a great combo with roses for that reason...

Thanks for the heads-up @Nollie... I have it growing elsewhere in the garden and it seems quite biddable! Also, my Shropshire Lads are growing in a very narrow strip between the wall and the patio... maybe it'll be ok there? I'll have a little think about it...

Oh! I went to one of the nearby garden centres to see if their roses were blooming yet, intending to sneak a peek and a sniff.

Desdemona was just opening up but already smelling lovely. Took every last ounce of self restraint to stop myself buying one.

They had Roald Dahl which looked good and few thorns.

Lady of Shalott was there too but potted as a climber - is it the same plant as the shrub or is there actually a difference?

I have been given a pink rose ( Wild Eve) that im going to put it a glazed container.
I'm dithering between pearly black, dark blue or teal. I discounted grey as I thought it might look washed out.
    What do you think?

I would choose dark blue, but depends on your taste. I also like pink and grey together.

That Golden Oldie is a gorgeous shape.
