A few hanging on here, with the cooler weather intensifying the colours - Wild Rover, Harlow Carr, Lady of Shallot bud, Julia Child:

I’m still waiting for my bare root roses from Tuincentumlottum, having ordered them a bit later than some of you, due the end of this month!

..what do you think of Harlow Carr @Nollie

...two nice roses came today from David Austin.... I've put them in a bucket of water overnight and will plant tomorrow weather permitting... Jude the Obscure and England's Rose...   I've not grown either of these before but I've heard quite a lot about them.. 'ER' looks a bit puny compared with Jude on the left...

@Marlorena, I’m very underwhelmed by Harlow Carr, had to virtually lie on the floor to take that photo as all you can see from above is the back of the bloom. Horribly thorny and most of the time the blooms are a very insipid colour here, even though it only gets morning sun. After three years it hasn’t got more than a foot high.

I received new pots today, they are a good compromise of size, cost and look, I am happy with them. The smaller ones are 47(h)x39(top dia)cm, the big one 55*43. I can put these on my concrete paths around the house without blocking the paths too much. They are 30l and 50l volume so should be still movable when planted (although just barely). I like the smaller ones more, they are the perfect size for me, not too plastic looking and they were £13 per pot. The big one isn't as good and was more expensive but fits exactly where I need it to fit. All are from eBay.
I am slightly worried they are not big enough long term but I probably won't have roses in them for more than 2-3 years. If I love them after that time and if they do well, they will get a place in the ground. If not, I will get something else. Basically, it allows me to grow more roses and fit them here, I would have problems to accommodate larger (wider) pots.

Very smart @edhelka. Will you need some thing heavy in the bottom of the taller ones to stop them toppling over in the Welsh wind?!

I need to go shopping for a pot for The Prince, to sit at the north-east corner of my house, where it can get a good dose of morning sun, then afternoon shade. From what I have read, it can take the heat, but the blooms will crisp in direct, hot sun. I’m thinking I need to go really big, as, assuming I like it, I want it to be in the pot permanently.

...those are nice pots... especially the one at the front... I'm using smaller plastic pots these days... as my garden is a merry-go-round of roses, coming and going, I may not keep some beyond a season, so there's no need for me to over pot them... and just a 6 or 10 ltr pot will take smaller roses through the main flush and beyond..

...does anyone garden at night?   I've just been out and planted those two roses that came today... well, I have lights so I can see and I find that evening time is best for me to get these jobs done...  tomorrow I'm expecting a delivery from Trevor White's...

@Nollie, they will go to a sheltered area close to the house and probably will be quite heavy when filled. But I think I will add some stones to the ones that will go to the front garden. I have a small potted tree there and the pot needs to be tied to the house wall.

I am also expecting roses from Trevor White tomorrow.
BTW I ordered another one from Austin, 'James Veitch', a moss rose. I am extremely undisciplined with my orders this year.
  • @Marlorena - oh I can often be found scrabbling around in the garden at unsociable hours.

Since we have a small garden and a garden room extension that sticks out into it with huge windows - it’s very easy to light up the garden. Last year I planted several roses in December in what would have been pitch black conditions. I planted my bareroot apple tree against the garden wall by torch light two years ago.

Wouldn’t be out there right now though - it’s chucking it down biblical!

@Nollie @Marlorena And mine is a meter tall in a pot in a north facing site (still some flowers). This is after giving it a proper haircut in July. Wonder if they prefer cooler climate.
  • @edhelka I would love those pots for filling up with tall tulips:)

@Marlorena still in the process of getting used to the time-change combined with dark, wet and cold.... brr.....Past 6 pm I’m on hibernation mode and only indulge in virtual gardening 🙂
