I find gardening such a frustrating hobby in winter. There is so much I want to be doing, but it's either too wet, too cold, too windy or dark 😒

I desperately want to tidy up the borders but I also want to leave the old stems etc for insects and to protect the crowns of the plants.

I also want to plant the heucheras that grew on from cuttings last year, but its too wet.

Lots of other jobs I can't do yet either. I've already pruned the roses, the apple trees, the Gooseberry and the blueberries so there's not much I can do now.

I'm mostly just feeding the birds at the moment. I did spot the first flower bud on the crocuses though today, so that was nice.

  • I need to go to B & Q today to buy a sheet of polycarbonate to replace the shed window that blew out in the wind on Tuesday night.

  • I went to my local GC to buy some bird seed and compost. I needed some retail therapy. They have a 20-25% discount on everything. I think for refurbishment as half their area is fenced off. I managed to come away by buying only the seed, compost and 4 packets of seeds. How restrained of me. However, when I got home I discovered I had bought a packet of Cat Grass instead of Cat Mint. I didn't have my reading glasses with me and went by the picture. Does that mean I have to go back to see if they will let me swap the grass seed for a different packet of seed, I have enough grass growing in my garden without adding to it, and should I leave my purse at home because I might just have to check out what plants they have reduced?

@Joyce Goldenlily, yes, you definitely need to go back to swap the grass seed and do take your purse with you, otherwise you might miss some treasures!

Retail therapy is a must during January.

  • I agree with @Lizzie27 !  A bargain missed is a treasure lost.  I love scouring the nurseries for reduced priced plants; you never know what you'll find.

Our favorite nursery offers classes and seminars nearly every weekend; my mother and I recently attended the hypertufa workshop, which was so much fun.  I just signed us up for a seminar about gardening with native plants - that is the extent of my garden activities for today.  We finally have temperatures just above freezing, but it's brought freezing rain with it on top of the inch or two of new snow from yesterday.  Not looking forward to my drive into work today or tomorrow, that's for sure.

Been mulching the fruit trees in the orchard. Bought some more veg seeds. Found our first snowdrops in flower in the shade. Lovely.
  • I remember when tufa rock was all the rage for growing alpines in, and for making troughs.
Just shows how old I am.

I have just done a dog poop collection in the garden and found some flower buds on my Sophora Golden King. I disturbed a bee on the winter flowering honeysuckle, I apologized of course and my Beach Combers daffodil is showing its leaves. Also found the autumn flowering clematis in flower, the label is lost so no name. Definitely not Freckles. I thought I had lost it last year in the gales when it was flattened but I propped it back up and gave it a pat on the head.
    Plants have amazing recuperative ability.

Quite nice for a change today so I potted up my new acquisition, an Olearia, into its new blue glazed pot and put it into place where I can see it from our bedroom window. it's just about tall enough to help hide my potting table. Our back garden slopes uphill so it's difficult to hide what I call my 'working area'.

I should of course put it in an entirely different position when we first moved in!

I replaced the window in my shed today as it had blown out in the storm the other day. I'm a bit worried that the edge is not completely straight, but what the heck, it's the shed!
I also ordered two Parahebe Snow Cloud. Not sure where they are going yet but they are my reward for diy.
