We realised that a large Laurel, which is trimmed in Autumn, was actually still growing up at the back and through next door’s Willow! We had missed that. We cut off all the long sky-ward branches as no possibility of nests there.
I made a start weeding my little circular border under the apple tree and nestled in a few Foxgloves (grown from seed last Autumn). I still have about 15 little Foxglove plants left to go into my shady border too.
Job for the weekend will be weeding/fiddling with my messy West facing border. It has Spanish Bluebells popping up now and then the Monbretia comes! Orange is not tolerated in that border - it’s pink and purple only allowed.
Yes. Put broad beans in larger pots with wigwams of canes. Pricked out chard seedlings and transplanted into pots, but keeping under cover. Pruned dead stems off blackcurrants. Put copper tape round some of the pots containing plants loved by slugs and snails. Enjoyed the sun - and warmth.
I pulled out all the old Stipa gigantica canes from my two biggish clumps and lots of dead grass from underneath. Useful brown material for the compost heap. I also cut back the old perennial stems on several plants and tidied up the courtyard area.
At last two days of dry with sunshine 🌞, so lawn cut , watering in greenhouse, and more weeding between pavers. Bit left to do but it's so good to get on!
@Sheps I found a big bucket like those at a consignment shop that I purchased to plant potatoes in, but the bucket has drainage holes drilled along the sides near the bottom all the way around. Would that make it impractical for potato growing?
New England, USA
Metacomet soil with hints of Woodbridge and Pillsbury
That's the roses done! Been meaning to tidy, feed, and spruce them up for a while but didn't like to walk on the sodden grass. Strawberry Hill climbing rose by the back door had aphids again, that's the 3rd time in a month. Hosed the aphids off and hoped some little bug on the ground will gobble them up.
While tidying up their soil I buried rotten old bananas and skins, I read it on the internet that bananas are full of potassium which roses love. It's an experiment.
Water butt is overflowing, took that as a que to draw off 4 watering cans full of water, with liquid lawn fertiliser added, the lawn got a good feed and the water butt now has spare capacity for when the promised rain comes next week.

Hi @CrankyYankee it depends where the holes are exactly, here are some pictures of the ones I use.
These are 30L buckets designed for potato growing, so have lots of drainage holes.
