  • Spent most of Friday going for a DVLA eye test and a community coronary group check up so yesterday didn't do much.
Yesterday sat and pond watched for a while and began weeding the slate area under the rotary dryer. Very satisfying to be able to pull up weeds, roots and all. very dead from weed killer spraying I did 3 weeks ago. Will try to finish it today as well as water my dying plants in containers.
Have promised myself poached egg on toast for breakfast before taking the dog for a short walk, rest and then a little sortie into the garden if it stays cool.

Had overnight rain on Friday night but still not enough.
Been busy today (very humid though and hope that more rain does come).
Pruning back shrubs trying to take over the front path. Refound hollyhocks on N side of polytunnel surrounded by allsorts of unwanteds.
Weeded out the courgette and squash areas.
Planted out kale, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings (all new to us so we don't know what to expect).
Tried beating the blackbirds again and picked a good size bowl of redcurrants.
Picked some more rhubarb for afters tonight.
Had more strawberries from the polytunnel and more lovely radishes that we had at lunch.

Deadheaded roses and watched OH dig me a big hole for a new clematis. It was very dry even 18" down and we found the soil was stony which is unusual for this garden. A big stone sat right at the bottom of course which had to be pickaxed out. Came to the conclusion it must have been builders rubble used to fill in behind the 4ft retaining wall.
Managed to plant the clematis after lunch, mixing the soil with manure to give it a boost.

Hope it survives being close neighbours with a rose and another clematis on the same 6ft obelisk. Not ideal I know but needs must! Gave it another can of water just before it started raining which didn't last unfortunately but at least it's cooler today.

  • Rain missed us and I had to water the little veggie department. Also cut the cornflower for the second flush.

    I my garden.

  • Rain came the minute after writing and has filled the butts.

    I my garden.

We had a few spots of rain about 5-00 then it stopped and then about 7-00 it really came down and was still raining when we went to bed , everything is so wet

  • I managed to finish weeding a square area around the base of the rotary dryer. Looks much tidier. Still acres to go. Topped up the pond.
Watered the greenhouse and containers on the patio, so many dead corpses.

Discovered my dog had hidden an empty plastic vacuum pack in his crate. Minus 4 slices of bacon! A dehydrated mouse and a dead ball. Disposed of all in the bin.
Last night he caught and killed one of my neighbours half grown chickens! He chased another into the conservatory, it knocked over a bag of nyger seed so seed everywhere, and also showed he thought there was a 3rd bird hiding somewhere. He thought Christmas had come early.
I felt mortified but my neighbour was very understanding, accepting that if she chooses to let the birds free range, this was a chance she has to take. I have done all I can to keep my dog in my garden and her chickens out . The 3rd chicken crept home later on, hopefully the trauma of being chased by my dog will teach them not to come back.
  • Glory be, it began raining around 12.30pm and carried on for about 3 hours. A lovely steady gentle rain. Just what we needed.
I  tied in the tomatoes and removed the errant side shoots which had appeared since 4 days ago.
The sum total of my activities for the day.
