Anyone done any gardening today? Part 5

  • I put the bark over weed membrane. The depth is about 3ins. so could be deeper. I have topped up the bark a couple of times but the original bark has broken down now which makes it an ideal growing medium for weeds. I use the very coarse bark which my cat refuses to walk on. It must prick her between her pads.
I try to hoe regularly but am now an old wrinkly so find it difficult.
Spraying with weedkiller is an easy option.
I find it frustrating that my neighbour bought the fields in front and behind my garden and has never touched them in 12 years. I have a constant battle with brambles climbing over the banks into my garden, I weedkiller spray them as far as I can reach but it is an ongoing battle.

@Joyce Goldenlily Oh well, you can only do what you can do. In your circumstances I'd go for the easy option as well. We actually had one of our bark mulch paths beside a long hedge replaced by paving earlier this year to make life easier. Stopped the cats using it as a litter tray and hey presto, no weeds either. Expensive but worth it.

Passed the local farmer failing the hedge along a lane this morning and asked him if he could do our front native hedge as well - it's got way above our reach - again! An hour later and the job's done, nice and neat, he took about 3 ft off the top. He only charged £30 as well, a far cry from the £250 we paid earlier in the year, I offered him more but he declined so we're very pleased.

I put all my green tomatoes in a bowl and put some red or ripening tomatoes in with them and they're all ripening.

I've got the afternoon off work today so I'm going to pick the rest of my tomatoes and bring them inside to ripen. I don't think they're going to do much more outside now. Keeping fingers crossed for the two cucumbers that look almost ready. They're full length but look as if they need to fill out a bit more.

Planted some tulip, narcissi and allium bulbs and potted up some cerinthe seedlings. Broad beans planted two weeks ago are growing well.

Took the plunge and started to plant some pots up with bulbs, did tulips and some tete-a-tete daffs. Still have more to plant but was good to make a start.
Not strictly gardening but if the rain holds off I may go out and find some sloes to start this years sloe gin production 🧃

Deadheaded the roses and took 15 rose cuttings, they won't all take that's why i did so many.

Started working on what I call my 'Rough Patch'  behind my Lutyens bench, which is a small, very steep section of what used to be part of the back lawn. Had to give up trying to mow it because it was so slippery. Made the mistake of planting a hardy geranium in the middle which has got bigger and bigger and now seeds itself all over the place, a total nightmare. Not sure how to kill it as it's got a big tap root and runners.

I put my green cherry tomatoes in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana and they've ripened very nicely.

  • I picked some more tomatoes to ripen off indoors, still hoping more will start to turn colour on the vines before pulling them up. Will definitely grow Big Mama again as a cooking tomato.
    Made some mincemeat for Christmas.
The garden is beginning to look very bedraggled although the Cosmos, Scabious and Welsh poppies are still flowering.
