Went round to MIL's. Cut back valerian that was going to seed all over the place. Had to cut two plants right down to the ground as they had just collapsed. Deadheaded peonies, pruned back rampant euonymus. FIL kindly brought out a bottle of chilled water, bless him. Took advantage of her absence to have a furkle around behind the greenhouse and found four pots of irises, admittedly on the small side, but some of them would be perfect to fill the gap left by the valerian, as they would get a good baking there. Made a frog homeless ! Apologised and left OH to rehome it! Pruned some pyracantha and forsythia that was sprawling all over the place. Lots of ladybird larvae around which was good to see. Brought the irises home to have a sort through, but that will have to wait - l am hot, cream crackered, somewhat fragrant (not in a good way). Heading off for a shower as soon as l've finished my cup of tea, assuming l can get up from the sofa...
@AnniD you have been busy, nothing too strenuous like digging though - far too hot for that here. OH painted the back gate - we have been waiting for a dry spell to do that. I deadheaded after picking strawbs, logans, courgettes and beetroot.
It depends on whether they have taken out all the growing points or not. Very often if they are grazed to the ground they will. I have potted one up that was left in the ground all winter, It was totally grazed off but is now throwing up a lot of new shoots.
Got up early and deadheaded. Tied up Claire Austin as she had gone a bit wild. Painted a fence panel (thought neighbour was going to replace it but he hasn't). Planted up some small Lupins in a pot and came inside to cool down.
While it was cool this morning son and I broke up some ruble for a base. Hoed where I'd walked on in the veg patch. Replace some peppers as something had eaten the lead shoots again, just taken a shoot of one of the onions as advised. Now it's far to hot to do anything more.
Watered some cyclamen I have been avoiding doing too much nearby as we have baby Blackbirds just fledged and being their usual helpless selves. Poor cyclamen are just coming up nicely covered in buds and wilting now of course as it it a tad warm. Planted a couple of ferns I have had growing on while I was at it, nice and early, almost cool.
Basically watering this morning and picked the first of the sweetpeas. Only 3, but it's a start. Watered the baskets again this afternoon and any plants in pots that were starting to droop. 38 degrees in the greenhouse at 3pm, thank heavens we got the shading on yesterday! Have damped down in there 3 times so far. Some of the plants in the ground are drooping a little (e.g. eupatorium "Chocolate"), when l think we had over 17mm of rain at the start of the week, l find that surprising.
