Planted more polyanthus plants, still got a lot that I raised from seed. Hubby has been pruning the rose bushes, there's a lot so he does them a few at a time.
I have been cutting back grasses today - it's very warm here on the South Coast this afternoon. We're also renovating our pergola, so OH has been painting and doing a bit of wood work. Spent an hour and a half on the Downs earlier with the dogs - they are now asleep!
I also cut the old canes off my two Stipa Gigantica grasses, a bit of a back-breaker job. Then I decided I might as well cut down the Japanese Anemone as the new shoots were already coming through. I left the debris on the ground though as the dead stuff was full of ladybirds and we might have another frost tonight. More bees and other insects around.Got up to 20.3 by 2.30!
Sowed 6 more trays of seeds - white aquilegia, beetroot, tomato, knapweed. Some that I sowed last week have begun to germinate, especially the beetroot, cucumber, radish and dahlia. I do hope that the temperature doesn't drop too much from where it is now, although we could certainly do with the rain here.
I also spent 5 minutes admiring the lovely snowdrops that have multiplied over the years at least 4 times over.
Potted on a couple of hellebores l bought yesterday (couple of bargains !) . They both have really good root systems. Also potted up a Bristol Ruby weigela l got from B&M for the princely sum of £1.99. It had some shoots, and when l soaked it before planting, that revealed 2 or 3 new shoots coming. Washed out a load of pots, they were drying so fast in the sun, it's ridiculous for this time of year. Last really nice day tomorrow, meeting a friend for coffee in the morning (at a GC ), hoping to get the chicken pellets down in the afternoon before the forecast rain hopefully materialises later this week. Never thought l'd be saying that in February!
I've done some tidying and weeding, removed a lot of blanket weed (no frogs)checked my one and only Dahlia tubers, all looking good and showing shoots. This is the first time I've ever had Dahlias,so not sure when to replant?
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
Finished cutting back the roses, dead headed mop heads, took old stems off fuchsia in greenhouse and more clearing up . Found new growth on the clematis so cut that back by half ( not such a good idea as used new secateurs cutting finger as well blood everywhere sheesh) that put an end to today's gardening.🙄
