  • Today I went out and decapitated a rock rose, helianthemum, to enable me to see and enjoy the coum cyclamen which are in flower at the moment. I have disliked the rock rose for several years but didn't have the heart to remove it until now. Also spread more fire ash in the greenhouse, am building up a level surface to lay paving slabs on as a central path.

    Took old leaves of Hellebores
Went to allotment to repair small hole in main sheds roofing felt
  • We worked together in the front garden, transplanting an established small bamboo after dividing it into 4 pieces, we then moved a Rhodo, which was in bud, so not the best time to be moving it.  If the weather doesn't freeze in the next few weeks it should survive.  OH carried on clearing the veg patch of old, dead foliage, and we decided to move one of the bird boxes which was just 2 metres off the ground on a tree trunk, is this too low?

I re-did the rain cover for my strawberry bed by cutting and bending a length of chicken wire over a long metal plant support and then tying a plastic cover over the wire. It's much higher than the old cover and the ends are open so there will be much better air flow through. The strawberry bed, (a 3ft x 2ft wooden slatted box on a table) tends to get a bit waterlogged with heavy rain so I keep it covered over the winter. To my amazement there were several tiny flowers on the plants!

Recovered the small plastic 4 shelf greenhouse
Use it as a cold frame and for storage , very useful
    Topped up bird feeders

  • I potted up some Lychnis Challedonica (Maltese Cross) today.  The seedlings were becoming leggy and I hope that potting them on will give them more room to bush out (with a little pinching of top growth too).

Emptied one of three compost bins.
  • We have been pruning buddleia this afternoon, all had new shoots on them, the white being the most prolific and I do wonder if we should prune them straight after flowering (picture taken last summer. OH mowed the grass around the field perimeter this morning. I am wondering whether to sow some seed in the glass house tomorrow.

I had to dig up a couple of clumps of snowdrops which are just about to flower and were underneath a big cotinus which we're having removed soon. I've replanted them in different places around the garden and hope they survive.
