Morning all. The frost and snow may be pretty to look at but it’s no fun travelling and being out in it - so take care all those out in it today. My sister’s cul-de-sac did a community grit last night (although very few participated- they were probably out buying up all the bread and milk).
Hi all. Got down to minus 8 in the garden, so no surprise that I was unfreezing the condensate pipe on the boiler at 6 am. this morning. Moira was up and about yesterday, so the problem today, will be trying to stop her doing things. Hope your weather calms down soon @Pat E Sounds like a very scary trip @Busy-Lizzie
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Morning all, afternoon Pat and happy belated birthday Raisingirl 😊 I hope you enjoyed your day. BusyL, that flight sounds horrendous! Glad your home safely. Glad the boiler is fixed Lirio, quest timing!! I find my cats affectionate when they need to steal your body heat! Glad Moira is up and about but boredom can promote doing too much, glad your about to supervise Pdoc 😊 Fairy, hope your enjoying this retirement lark! I'm pretending I'm joining you for a week as I've got a week's annual leave as it's OH significant birthday! Massive food shop on the to do list today, in more than one shop! Minus forf out there at the mo do second coffee i think!! Stay safe and warm everyone!
Glad to hear promising news of Moira, Punkdoc. It sounds as if the Doc might need to put his foot down...
I don't know why our condensate pipe has never frozen. It certainly gets cold enough around here... not that I'm complaining, since our boiler is ridiculously touchy about the slightest problem. It's working now though.
Lizzie, that sounds really frightening. Glad you're back safe!
Obelixx, I guess you're not tempted to go vegan then... we eat a lot of vegetarian meals, but I don't think I could cope with being completely vegan. It was hard enough at Christmas catering for our grandson, who's allergic to dairy products.
Pat, does the forecast give you any hope that it'll cool down any time soon? Your current weather sounds horrendous!
A community grit is a good idea, AuntyRach. The 51 steps down to the main road, which start just beyond our house, apparently don't belong to anyone. They are on the old boundary between Yorks and Lancs, and when the land was handed over to Yorks the paperwork was conveniently "lost", so the council say they don't own the steps and therefore have no responsibility for maintaining them. There's a council grit bin at the top, but they won't fill it, in case we residents sue them for not gritting the steps (and not fixing the wobbly one). We've bought grit in the past, and put it in the bin so whoever's using the steps can grit at least the top flight. But unless we find a way to padlock the bin, dog walkers will continue to use it to chuck poo into.
Careful on the roads, Hosta and anyone else needing to drive.

Ooh yes, meant to say "Happy Un-Birthday" to Raisingirl.
Enjoy your week off, Wonky. You're right about timing for the boiler breakdown - luckily we have a stove in the living room and plenty of old wood needing burning.
Hope the builders get something useful done today, Fairy!

Morning everyone. I'm always happier on the days when it's NOT my birthday - survived another one with cake left over It's a no flour or butter type cake - so a dessert with cream and fresh fruit sort of thing, rather than a slice with your coffee. It's delicious - not too sweet. (Rick Stein recipe). It's very cold here - luckily no condensate pipes to worry about. You probably don't have enough insulation in your walls Liri, so the heat leaking out of the house stops the pipe freezing up. Snow forecast this afternoon - it is snowing now a bit - so we did the shopping yesterday. Went to pick up the auction 'win' - a couple of really nice folding garden chairs and a huuuuge planter - proper tree sized one . Happily OH didn't buy any airfix models, gym equipment, deep fat fryers or 'contents of one shelf' piles of goodness knows what. It was a close thing though - he did accidentally bid on one thing with his sleeve on the lap top, reaching for his tea, but luckily was outbid.
As a dog walker I clearly lack imagination. It has never occurred to me to put a poo bag in a grit bin.
Horrible experience, BL. I'm with Fairy on the subject of planes. Hate them. We flew back from Amsterdam in a howling gale some years back. Apparently Dutch pilots are very used to landing in windy weather. He managed, on the third attempt, to get onto the runway at Bristol - on one wheel. I was so thankful to get off that plane. And then watched it taxi round and take off again, going on to Cardiff

We once spent our joint holiday weekend in Amsterdam. Not the place to be on a cold December morning as it's closed and there's a howling gale comes in off the North Sea so yes - Dutch pilots know all about windy conditions.
The wind is calmer here today and due north so very cold. 5° of chill so it feels below freezing but is actually just above and very very wet, so wet I have postponed plans to nip all of 10 metres out to the cave to check paint supplies ready for next week.
Chicky and Liri - can't believe how many pots and pans and bowls and knives and so on go into producing a single vegan meal. Definitely best to stick to spicy, herby stir fries I reckon tho she did a "bowl" yesterday with couscous, roast cauli, chick peas, spinach and sweet potatoes and a sweet and spicy tahini dressing. Tasty, but too many processes. Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to a simple piece of wholemeal toast with proper sea salt butter. Even craving frites mayo which I hardly ever eat these days. And some fish.
Good week to be at home Wonky. Hope you're enjoying it. Significant birthdays need celebrating.
BL - hope you are both fully recovered now. Maybe best to avoid flying around Dove's birthday in future.......
Better go and find something dry to do that isn't patchwork homework as my mystery quilt is intended for Possum so has to be secret too.

Rubbish night again. Bunged up, coughing and now it's coal face duties in the freezing cold.
