  • My OH has started making mince pies again since we found out that 2 in our family are Wheat & dairy intolerant, so she makes 2 lots, One "normal" the others a smaller batch with wheat free flour & margarine. As another GD has severe peanut allergy we have a great time here making from scratch so we can be sure we won't make ill/ kill anyone.

Morning all/afties, evening Pat if you're around.
Already finished work. Should have been in today, but my colleague [who can make decisions  ;) ] decided it wasn't worth it, or as she put it 'we spend enough time in this *#$*** place'   :D
Gloomy sort of day, but not too cold, just damp and nothingy.
ABoy - it's difficult isn't it? At least when you make them yourself, you have a better idea of what's in them, and you can regulate it. My youngest has some problems with dairy, but she's prepared to put up with coming out in a rash so that she can have profiteroles for her pudding!
They seem to have got a bit of a grip on the drone idiot[s] so at least some folk will be able to get home/or get their hols. What a fiasco.
There was an item on our news last night re todays' 30th anniversary of Lockerbie. A farmer and his father had found bodies on the farm, and the son is having 'a little moment' to think about them, as he does every year. He's still finding bits of the plane on the farm too. We think of farmers as big tough blokes who are used to death, but that was a different scenario altogether. He was visibly moved and unsettled.
A timely reminder of what these events can do to people for decades, and highlights  the need for safety at Gatwick before letting people board a plane.

You're forgiven - season of goodwill and all that. Don't do it again though  ;)
I'm just watching the breakfast news and they've been doing an item about those  lovely chaps Bill Turnbull and Stephen Fry re their cancer, and how it's helped so many people. Apparently, they're calling it the Turnbull/Fry effect in the medical world, because so many men have come forward to be checked, and in many cases, helped. Wonderful  :)

@Fairygirl, hurrah for the "Turnbull Fry effect". Let's hope it's as useful as the brave women who came forward to champion breast/cervical screening.

It's great isn't it Hosta? Judging by the letters and messages they were reading out, it would seem it's already saved dozens of lives, probably hundreds, and has made a huge difference.
They said Bill Turnbull could have another ten years or so with the right treatment which is brilliant. It must have been devastating for him and his family. When you're told terminal, I'd think you naturally assume you have months, not years.

I may be heading for Turnbull/Fry territory which is much more common than many realise. The search for the source of the DVT I had in the summer has thrown up this as a strong possibility. Accidental early discovery may be a hidden blessing although I could do without the stress at this time of year.

Oh steephill - I'm so sorry. This is when I wish I really did have a wand.

They were saying you often don't get early symptoms, but the best approach is to be aware if you're in the categories at risk so that you can go and get checked.
I'm an atheist, but I'll be praying for you to have a good outcome. I won't say try not to worry, because of course you will.
I'm sending loads of love and virtual hugs to you and your family x
