I didn't know what people were talking about when they moaned about fox stink, until I visited a friend's garden the other week. Holy hell! What a smell! The whole back half her garden reeked. I get it now. I had a fox family living under my decking. Thank heaven they hadn't been marking territory in that way.

It is vile. I have a horrible feeling it's not all coming from my garden either, so if I manage to deter them it might not make a difference :(

My friend's fox markings were around a hole in the fence - a passage between gardens. I guess it was important for them to mark the change of territory at that point. I suspect her blocking up the hole might change things.

I have been trying an RSPB cat deterrent over the past few months and it seems to be working. I'm quite amazed as I pretty low expectations. The deal test will come over the winter when I am not in the garden much and the cats are left to their own devices. There is a sonic offputter for foxes. Have you investigated?

I've got one. It might be making a small difference. OTOH it might be why they're coming up to the end nearer the house more - its range is 30 foot and I've got it down the far end.

It's a stinky problem, for sure. Water cannon?

    That might be next.

The hill is on fire again. I spoke to the guy who owns the land earlier today and he said the fire service have told him it's not a priority. I've seen whole hillsides on fire in more than one place in the last couple of days so I can imagine the strain they're under to just have to let fires burn now. The farmer who owns the adjacent land still hasn't moved his horses though and there's 2 young foals up there. :/ the burn scar is right up to their field but there's a good stone wall in the way luckily.

I should be getting sick of the smell of smoke by now but heath fire smoke just makes me crave smoked fish and peaty whisky.

Glad you're looking on the bright side (tho' of course that's not very curmudgeonly of you).

Well I don't have any smokey whisky or fish so there's that to be grumpy about I guess :# maybe I could get a trout from Morrison's and smoke that later. If I use enough smoke the helicopter might come and water my garden o:)

Sounds like a cunning plan ;)
