@AnniD,..sorry to learn about your Mum,..she can laugh and it must be nice for you to hear that.
You seem to be having a good day all round,..except for the absence of George ,..your OH was nice to have a cup of tea ready for you,..George could only offer Coffee lol.
@Perplerain,..hope your weather will improve,..our spell of rain seems over as today was a dry sunny day and so lots of wandering around the garden inventing things to do,..thankfully you have The Edible Garden to view.
@Valley Gardener,..i was looking at your Trellis today in your post,..i realised that i had an identical one and it lasted for years,..sadly the Honeysuckle i had grown on it twisted the sections and the weight finished it off,..had i grown a rose bush or Sweet Pea it might still be there,..i hope yours lasts for many years.
Finally the 1st Amaryllis Bloom has fully opened,..now there are 5 blooms,..the one fully opened is just over 15cm wide.
Monty Don was planting Amaryllis bulbs tonight on Gardeners World,..he was planting them for outdoors and as he mentioned they need a lot of sun,..i mostly keep mine indoors though give them a treat when its warm and sunny.
The Amaryllis now in bloom has also grown a Pup and i noticed today it is going to bloom,..as shown below.
Planting indoors and allowing the large bulb to be exposed by about a quarter of its size above the surface is ideal for indoor growing,..image below.
@Valley Gardener I would probably have got it right having had a G&T! Love your rescue cat Cush on the Pet Companions thread. @nultyphilip224. Weather not good again yesterday so nothing achieved but today the sun is out and looks very promising. You did have a hefty bill at the Pharmacy. Do you find Voltarol works? Have been thinking of getting some as once I start on the weeding it doesn't do my knees any good. Anything behind lock and key is going to cost you. Why do people want blue Hydrangeas? I remember my mother emptying the teapot on hers as she had been told it would turn it blue but wouldn't know if it worked. Mauve sounds ok. If you were wearing your new glasses when you took the photo of Whisper I think she is wondering whether you are an imposter. Lovely area for Foxy Molly to have a run around. Hope this promising weather is with you all and you are able to get out into the garden. Birds missed a day of fresh seed so they will be hungry today.
@nultyphilip224 and all, thank you so much for such a beautiful card. I got "totes emosh" as l believe the young people say. Hoping to get back out in the garden later, blackbird was at the back door at quarter past seven waiting for his mealworms, my breakfast has to wait ! Have a good day, whatever you are up to. Thanks again.
I did some GC spending today,I bought three different coloured Delphiniums,Lavender,Sky blue and Cherry blossom. I had a job to find them, they were tucked away almost out of sight! Also got a very vigorous looking Polmonium,i've no idea what these are like! Can you cast a light @nultyphilip224 ?? I also treated the birds to a posh ground feeder, one that looks like a miniature riddle.
Right I'm off to do some bits and pieces in the garden, think I'll hang fire with the Delphs as the forecast is for frost!!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
Totes emosh @AnniD. You do come out with some corkers 😀. I hope you have some lovely spires in your garden this year @Valley Gardener. I love delphiniums, they are so majestic. Whisper does look quizzical granma, I wonder why..
I joined in a thread about mulching tonight, and wondered what your thoughts are @nultyphilip224. I have spread one border today just to try it, but Monty was on last night saying it was essential. I usually do it in Autumn. What do you think?
Had good fun at "the wedding singer" this afternoon. So many talented singers and dancers. I wish I had the nerve to tread the boards when I was young.
@Valley Gardener. You certainly enjoyed your time at the GC. Maybe you will get them planted out tomorrow. Can't quite imagine what your ground feeder is like. I would be worried about the cats. @Purplerain. I have never mulched before but decided I would make a start when I bought the bark. I read an article in the paper today from AT and it made perfect sense to mulch and saves you a lot of time from weeding when the nicer weather comes. Obviously I haven't done it in the Autumn but will start pretty soon. @nultyphilip224 Sorry Philip but I have to ask for the amount of Neem oil to water as I have searched the thread and can't find where you previously explained. It was a beautiful day here today. Didn't get to the allotment till quite late but enjoyed the time there. I had been to B@Q just to get a new made up hanging basket but they only had the metal hanging type and I don't like those as they go rusty and when you take them down the chain gets caught up with the plants. Instead I bought four well established pansies and have a spare plastic hanging basket so will pot up my own. I also bought four lavenders which I needed to replace a few that have died off down the pathway, a Heuchera from "death row" for £1 which I am sure will pick up and then I saw a Snakes Head Fritillary which I had to buy as I had never seen or heard of them until they were on a recent thread! It's a good feeling going out with a full trolley.
Hopefully the weather will be as good tomorrow for all of us.
@Fran IOM,..the sun was out for you,..i hope it remained like that,..it was wonderful here,..i visited that Park today where Foxy Molly can have a good run and there were people sitting in the sun gazing at the river life,..returned home and remained in the garden for hours,..its impossible to list all i managed,..flitting from one thing to another,..however i had intended moving a rose bush that never really came into itself,..producing just a few roses,..so i got stuck into that,..the weather and ground are right for it,..i took 2 cuttings first and planted them,..just in case the rose objected being moved,..then took up the bush,..discovered it was the soil that was bone dry which may have caused the problem,..it was watered like all the other plants however being so close to the house and my cement shed the soil would be drained of moisture quickly by the cement foundations.
Oh purchase that Voltarol,..its like magic,..start with the 50g,..its the smallest tube and use it sparingly,..for years i have had low back pain and despite Physio and injections and tablets nothing worked so i gave up all medication,..decided to give Voltarol a chance,..it worked the first day and quick enough,..in fact while my egg was boiling for breakfast i applied a small amount to my back,..by the time my egg was ready the pain had almost gone,..it was gone just after breakfast,.. and completely,.. so my early morning doggy walks are pain free as is gardening.
I guess people want Blue Hydrangeas because only Pinks will grow in their garden,..so to add the Hydrangea Colourant which has the Iron/Aluminium/Salts/ to a Pink plant you get Blue,..if you add it to a Dark Pink you get Mauve,..this also works on other plants just to intensify the plant colour.
My Dad used to add rusty nails and other metal to do the above,..also to change eating Apple trees fruit to a cooking Apple.
Lol at 'Whisper',..the expression does look as if she is questioning who i am with glasses on,..totes emosh.
@AnniD ,..so you went totes emosh as well lol,..i hope you managed to get out in the garden,..nice to have a Blackbird greeting you in the morning,..while waiting to be fed,..and before your own breakfast.
@Valley Gardener ,..ah spending again,..you did well with your choice Delphiniums Sky Blue,.. Cherry Blossom and Lavender,..you will never have to purchase more as the plants seed very well plus they increase in size and divide easily.
Ah the Polmonium you asked about,..i sowed some seeds of them this week,..Polmonium 'Jacobs ladder',..the pale blue,.. i was sent the seeds from a kind Member here ,..they are a member of the 'Phlox Family',..they grow well in cooler temperatures reaching a height of approx 30cm.
@Purplerain ,..i didn't see that Thread about Mulching,.. i did see Monty Don Mulching on Gardeners World,.. but didn't give it much thought,..because i top up quite a lot of containers with compost,..each season,..then do the same with the remainder of the growing area,..you would be surprised at how much soil seeps out through the bottom of containers,..i do this as a seasonal chore,..plus spreading of Tea Bags helps enrich the soil.
I would say its essential,.. in my case as i have such a high density of plants and can not dig something into the soil,..so to compensate the surface soil losing its goodness mulching is good.
@granma ,..i have to agree the expression on 'Whispers' face is a questioning look,..they do have quite a selection of expressions,..dogs can really put on some good ones lol,..i met a friend in the Park with his Wife today,..they noticed my glasses were not just Sunglasses,..mentioned it of course,..oh well its the New Look lol.
