I've been absent too I'm afraid, just a few days with painful hip,but yesterday went and had a guided steroid/cortisone injection, and touch wood,it's feeling much better thismorning. I have the dreaded Colonoscopy on Sun am! Because my lovely Dad died of bowel cancer,i have to go through this procedure every three years!!😕
Beautiful video @nultyphilip224 I think your area is lovely, there must be so much to paint? Thismorning I planted a few seeds........Gazania,Cosmos and mixed coloured Marigolds, some on kitchen window sill, some in tiny GH! I scattered cornflower, and corn cockles, but this time I've put down a very few pellets to stop the pesky slugs! I never saw the cornflowers last year! My expensive Clems just disappeared after flowering, and I thought they had died, however they are now showing healthy growth,so they never actually got pruned. I find the Montana type flower a lot longer.
Yes @FranIOM I will put the cat on when I've done it,all the cards sold on Sunday, but still time to do a few more. My legs may have been idle, but not my hands, when I'm not painting,I'm knitting!
@Valley Gardener,..sorry to read that you also were absent,..gosh you are really going through a hard painful time,..i hope the painful hip has fully eased off the pain,..i shudder thinking about your steroid/cortisone injection but then to add to it all that Colonoscopy,..my thought are with you.
Ah yes i could imagine you painting some of the scenes round about here,..i did paint for a number of years,..mostly watercolours and a few mixed medium and just one oil which i painted for a friend in Scotland who loved a certain spot in Donegal,..alas i had too many hobbies and let the painting go by the wayside.
Glad to see you back @nultyphilip224. It sounds as if your garden took a battering from storm Gavin (or whatever they like to call the latest windy day). We have had torrential rain and some wind, and the ground is unworkable at the moment. I hope your eye problem is getting better.
Is the cage for birds? It is keeping the cats interested for sure, but I am guessing it is an old photo as you only have Whisper now.
The seeds are all doing well here. Antirhinnum, Stock, Cosmos, Tomatoes and Scabiosa. This year I have been moving them from seed trays to cell trays and that takes up less room. I did an experiment with some. I didn't wait until the second set of leaves came through, just potted on at the cotyledon stage in mpc and grit, and they are romping away. I think I saw the suggestion in a Charles Dowding video.
Anyway, enough from me. One day if you have time I would love to hear about your exploits in the West End. The peace and quiet you have now must be quite a contrast to the past.
@nultyphilip224 Welcome back to the forum Philip. It must have been frustrating not to be able to get on to the website. As you have noticed you were missed! Sounds as though you got the worst of the weather but able to cope well especially with the power cut. We fortunately haven't had any snow but very high winds, rain and very cold. How lovely to have those walks so close to home. Very peaceful no doubt. More beautiful cat photos with witty comments! Hope now you will be able to tidy your garden after the storm but doesn't sound as though you had too much damage. Spring can't come quick enough. Have you noticed how the number of views on your thread bumps up so quickly?
@Purplerain,..its a relief being back even though it was a sort absence but not being able to log in was a problem,..how to let someone know i couldn't log in,..one would need to have at least one members email address then contact them and they inform the Administrator,..then i searched the main Site Page and found a link to the Site Crew,..its good to know of that link.
Apart from the fence and a few flowerpots being knocked down i had no real damage to be upset about,..i see that you also had the storm as well,..no damage i hope,..i wasn't fully aware of anything happening with the world with no TV,..just a radio and music to keep me occupied.
Oh those cages are to be placed over Lettuce and Spring Onions,..they keep the cat and any of her visiting friends from doing any damage,..Blackbirds can really dig up small seedlings and even good sized plants.
Delighted to hear your seeds and seedlings are doing so well and an interesting lot they are as well,..good on you experimenting and not sticking exactly to the norm with the seedlings.
Yep,..old cat images,..they fill a gap when there isn't images of plants and flowers and those images are easy to get at.
Oh the West End was an experience,..a good one and i enjoyed every day,..and night,..i changed jobs very quickly as i was poached most of the time,..when someone in authority noticed how i was relaxed and gave evidence dotting all the eyes by the book i was asked would i like to change over to them,..Burberry Of Regent St,..then Liberty Of Regent Street,..then to Robert Holmes a Court,..finally 'Pinkerton Detective Agency',..it was hectic but exciting times.
@Fran IOM,..gosh i did noticed i was missed i wasn't expecting it to be so much,..you are all very genuine people and i appreciate that very much.
Yep i did notice the amount of views on this Thread went up really high and quickly,..people really like images and consistency in posts and not big gaps,..most of all we are all of a friendly nature who garden and also have a laugh.
I manage to get some time in the garden each day and i can see the progress,..its like making a room tidy except its a garden,..i will have a good display of Lupins and Delphiniums this season plus lots of Foxgloves and Phlox,..the Phlox stock increase is down to cuttings,..Delphiniums enlarged in spread,..Foxgloves self seeded,..i gave away several rose bushes last season as i had too many pinks,..so with cuttings i have replaced those roses with red/yellow/white and a tangerine rose,..they all seem healthy as of today,..i am really looking forward to seeing what crosses there will be with Lupins,..i checked from last year and had wine colour then a yellow and a multicoloured one,..hopefully they will give some new surprises.
Pigeons are having a great feast on the Ivy Berries,..we used to make ink from those berries way back,..we always called these wild Pigeons 'Wood Quest',..very nice to make a Pie with.
He/she is a handsome bird! We have a pair that visit for food,so they get the stuff that is too big for the little birds,i couldn't eat one though! I saw Delphiniums in a garden centre yesterday, that were a foot high,my hand hovered over them, but decided against as I didn't know if frost could still get them? The kitchen window sill is covered in seeds.......with a space for cat sitting!😊
An exciting day today,as the wooden garden shed arrives, replacing awful inherited green plastic ones! It will need electricity to it,so I hope it won't disrupt my planting!
That's interesting about making ink @nultyphilip224 ,how well did it work? Did you crush them with something? I'd like to have a go at using ink made with Ivy berries.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@nultyphilip224. Like you I think of gardening as housework which I enjoy. Tidying up and cleaning etc. Smudge looked a dear little soul not unlike my current cat but he has a patch over one eye rather than a smudge on his nose. I think members like to look at your thread just to see all your photos. My foxgloves don't appear to have self seeded. I managed to get an hour in today although it was still windy but not quite so cold. It was two weeks since I was last able to do anything. Didn't have a lot of enthusiasm but managed to plant out my anemone and some other which I don't have the name of to hand. Did notice that one plant has self seeded but will have to go through my tin of labels to see what it is and whether it's worth keeping them. You can tell how disorganised I am! Looking at the roses I have planted the David Austin ones are well ahead of those from the pound shop but to be fair they had no growth on them to start with whereas the DA ones were well established. Have no idea what colours I will see when they flower. Same with the lupins I still have to plant out. We will wait for photos of yours in the summer. How do you protect them from slugs and snails? @Valley Gardener Have you been back for the delphiniums yet?? I have a pair of wood pigeons who visit the allotment waiting to see what the little birds drop. Normally they sit close together in the tree but I think they must have had a falling out the other day as they were on separate branches and one chased the other off. Back together today. Maybe the ink from the ivy berries you could use in your paintings. You will be looking at your new shed today and wondering how to arrange the inside. Do hope your hip is still feeling easier. @AnniD Thought at first you had got the cat's name wrong calling him Pebble but like you I loved the "cat pebble". Cats seem to get comfortable in any place they want to be.
@Valley Gardener,..I also have a pair who roost every night in the trees at the back of the house,..they arrive back here every March and usually have a few chicks before flying away,..i don't eat them anymore but at one time it was a weekly treat,..they taste like a mix between Lamb and Roast Beef,..nothing really meaty on them except the breast,..i was a regular hunter for the pot for many years as there is an abundance of game hereabouts.
Ah so you were tempted to have a go with the Delphiniums you came across,..a good flower to have as they increase in spread plus its easy to collect the seeds,..they produce a spectacular lot of blooms every year,..you would be safe frost wise now,..providing we don't have a freak arrival of frost,..my Delphiniums are about 30 Cm high today,..lol at leaving a space on the window sill between the seeds for the cat,..i have to admit doing things like that,..i have little beds for the cat here and there,..one behind the TV.
The Ivy Berries we used to crush in a strainer with a rounded stone then soaked for a spell in a small amount of water,..we couldn't use a kitchen pommel as it would be well stained,..the ink was a success in particular when only a small amount of water was added.
I hope your new shed arrived and you are pleased with it,..yep electricity is a must.
@AnniD,..i have stood in amazement at where my cats decided to have a sleep,..as you mentioned some of the most uncomfortable spots. 'Smudge',..could often be seen just about hanging on.
