  • My break away from the computer was well spent as i got stuck into the garden for most of each day,..no rain but mild sunny days with blue sky,..hard to credit its Irish weather.

Finally my Hellebore 'Double Ellen Red',..are in full bloom.

They look well in contrast to the Hellebore 'Double Ellen Picotee'

Two of my Amaryllis are showing buds,..its not easy to predict just when these flower as they have bloomed in June some years other years in December,..a beautiful plant when in bloom as the blooms can be 15 cm across and even bigger,..with up to eight blooms at one time.

This one is Amaryllis 'Royal Red',..which i keep indoors. ( these are not in bloom as yet )

    Amaryllis 'Minerva'.

The buds as they are today though they grow very fast.

Hi Philip, could you remind me what sort of fertiliser you use on your plants?  Is it tomato feed?
I live in the countryside and I have foxes around me; therefore I don't really want to apply fish blood and bone (which seems to be the general fertilizer recommendation on this forum).
Just want to see what other options there are.

I wondered where you'd got to @nultyphilip224 but I suppose a great gardener like you likes to spend some time in his garden. I was just thinking the other day that germinating seeds is my favourite part of the process at this time of year. I am terrible at getting out when it's still cold and wet.

I hope you have success with your hellibore @Fran IOM and it's lovely to see you on this thread @granma. I was reading that you have 4 greenhouses and are thinking of reducing it to one. I have greenhouse envy here. I am sure Philip will be along to help you out with the fbb question @gutties.

@gutties,..i tend to stick to a liquid fertiliser either 'Grandiol Multi Purpose',..which i purchase from LIDL,..or 'Grow Sure All Purpose',..both of these will last long as its a half capfull to 5Litres of water,..i have never used Tomato Feed but i suppose it would be similar they all give good results,..i treat my plants at least once in 14 days and on a dry day of course and not when the sun is shining as liquid on plants will cause the sun to magnify.

Hi Philip,  l love dipping in and out of this thread, that double red hellebore is beautiful. Apologies if you have answered this before, but l see your hellebores are in large pots . If l did the same and kept them in the shadier part of my garden over summer (South West facing so not a lot of shade then, but a bit), would that be okay ? Also is multi purpose compost okay? Many thanks for any advice !

@Purplerain,..oh i wish i was a great gardener lol,..i have forgotten so much in the past couple of years and have to keep testing myself,..luckily i have always made notes and kept them to the present day,..in fact only last night i had to look back at my notes on growing Veg,..back to 2004,..as i will grow Scallions and Lettuce this year.

Its a cold and wet day today so you would not be out were you here,..neither am i lol,..so its house chores.

Old Notes but still very handy today.

@AnniD,..delighted to read you dip in and out here,..ah yes that Red Hellebore is a stunner,..oh yes your Hellebore will thrive in a large pot and in particular in a shadier part of your garden as compared to full sun,..at present mine are close to my back door where i can enjoy the blooms but later this year when its warmer and sunnier i will place them in a shadier spot,..as for feeding them,..a multi purpose compost is fine in March and again in September,..its what i use but many gardeners swear by Fish and Bone Fertiliser.

Hi Philip and all. Many thanks for the information regarding planting out my hellebore. I shall bear it all in mind. I could only blame myself if things go wrong as it is so healthy. You must be having much better weather than we are having here as I have been unable to do any gardening since last Thursday and Friday. I get very frustrated not being able to get on with things but the forecast is better later this week. Yet more beautiful photos. Maybe some time soon I shall see some results. Must admit that computers can be addictive but good to spend time away from them although I always like to catch up on the forum. The time you post on the forum would suggest you don't have early nights? Here's hoping we all get some good gardening weather soon.  :)

    What problem would it cause?
