  • @Fran IOM,..from seeing prices here and there £5.95 is a good offer,..for 5 plants,..however if it states Hellebores 'Niger' i would decline the offer as below is a Hellebores 'Niger',..all white blooms sometimes with a hint of pink.

No sign of my Hellebores 'Double Ellen Red' opening lol.

Hi Philip  Many thanks for your advice. I won't take up the offer as they wouldn't bring any colour during winter. Pleased I asked as I would have been disappointed  :)
Hope "Double Ellen Red" opens soon for you.

There was a recent post asking why their Helliborus Niger kept dying. I replied to it as best I could, but it is a tricky one @Fran IOM . It is also known as Christmas Rose. I grow it for the challenge and it is quite pretty when in full bloom, but @nultyphilip224 is right. There are much nicer not so fussy ones. Be sure to post a photo when that double red pops up.

Thanks @Purplerain. As you say there are much nicer ones out there so I shall keep a lookout for further offers. Probably just as well as I have quite a few other plants to plant out when the weather is warmer. I just hope I can find the space. I am sure I shall find somewhere...  :)
  • Normally I love white flowers,Snowdrops,Lily of the valley,Cosmos etc,but I think a bit of a cheery colour is needed for the winter.
My big disappointment last summer was a Hollyhock, that was supposed to be Red/Maroon,and turned out white! It looked ok ish, till the rust appeared!
It was a free pkt of seeds.......what a con!

  • Hi @Fran IOM,..@Purplerain,..@Valley Gardener,
I have nothing against Hellebores 'niger/christmas rose',..except mine get scruffy from the smallest speck of dirt or bit of leaf and being a white bloom it shows up drastically when  images are captured,..the other colours may have the same specks of soil and leaf but it doesn't show.

Spring 2016,..i made a jumpy video and was not at all pleased with it,..however one can see some of the Hellebores Double Ellen 'picotee',..Double Ellen Red',..and 'niger white',..plus the one with a flush of pink,..hope it doesn't bore you.

I went overboard with Hollyhocks that year and despite the rust appearing as usual the blooms were fantastic.

Your hellebores don't seem to mind the cold weather. They all look amazing. Not sure what time of the year is the best time to buy them or they may only be available at a certain time. There is nothing "boring" about your photos Philip. Keep up the good work.

Very cold and frosty here too. My car is an icebox so I have used one key to keep the engine running, and the other key to lock it. Not that anyone would want to steal my 10 year old Fiat Panda, but I like to be cautious 🙂.

as Fran said, there is nothing boring about your photos Philip. I could be wrong Fran, but I am sure I read that you can plant them at any time. I bought some of mine from Hayloft after Winter a couple of years ago.

    Keep warm everyone.

Will look out for any which may be for sale. Get plenty of emails from gardening companies. Probably will appear on offers once spring arrives. :)
