All caught up now, lovely pics as usual Philip, your pictures always brighten my mood and make me smile. Those cards were beautiful too, gosh time is flying the middle of January already! I have several flowers in the garden, but I can't remember what they are, I must post some pics. Your setter looked like she/he was a right giddy gooley.....she had a bit of a mad glint in her eyes!
@Mary370,..hi Mary,..nice to see you posting again,..you were missed,..so your Lupins are showing lots of new growth,..that's good news,..beware of those hungry Snails and Slugs that are about due to the mild weather you are having.
Imagine we will be having our Traditional Spring starting in 15 days,..i tend to go by that date though Seasons have altered in the past few years that even the Wildlife are confused as are plants.
Oh yes that Setter 'Molly',..was a character,..never got into mischief or misbehaved in the house but gave that look from the side of her eye,..like below.
I must admit she was a very happy dog and still sadly missed.
Some shots of Hellebores below as captured yesterday,..its always a case of almost getting under the bloom to capture an image as the bloom hangs down.
The Chicken Wire is out now to protect my new Lily shoots,..the birds scrape the soil looking for worms and in the process break off the young shoots.
@Liriodendron,..@Valley Gardener,..those deep pots are great for starting rose cuttings as you can leave the cutting in the pot for longer periods compared to a shallower pot.
Apart from starting cuttings in a pot,..or in a drill,..or under glass,..many people use a transparent plastic bag over the flowerpot and cutting held up from touching the cutting with small stakes,..it works very well,..as mentioned i don't use that method,..to each his or her own.
I use grit in all my pots when taking starting cuttings,..i also use the grit on my pathways throughout the garden,..i have stepping stones on some paths and the grit between the stepping stones helps cut the weeds as i walk about.
Good idea @nultyphilip224,i have slabs laid on sand as a temporary thing, last year,so much needed doing. The small terrace was underneath a massive decking construction that was dangerously rotted. So the little sloping gardens are all new.Had to lug soil up from the bottom of the garden! Now because of my condition,a rail has to go on one side of the steps, but I want it rustic, not a horrible metal disabled one!!!
I will put on pics of my cowslips and pink ball thingy, also poor old.......very very old rescued rose. You can see from the background, she wasn't having much of a life!!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@Valley Gardener,..i like your sloping gardens,..it gives more scope to arrange plants,..i am pondering on your hand rail,..wondering which side will you have the rail?,..on the left side looking at the image?,..so when you are coming down the steps you will have support and wont fall down,..which would be a worse fall than when going up. Oh that poor old rose was in a dodgy location and open to all kinds of damage,..a rescue was well needed,..nice to know it will live for some time to come,..well done.
Very calm morning here and i am up early,..i can hear the dozens of 'Whooper Swans' singing,..there must be at least 300,..all arrived from Iceland,..they will remain here until around mid March,..our native Swans are Mute and have orange beaks where as the 'Whooper Swans' beaks are yellow and black.
@nultyphilip224 That's about a third of the garden,it's long and narrow,I've got clemmies against the wall, and my little wildlife pond on the left. Do you know what those pink flowers are? Planning on moving Rescue to the wall, when's the best time to do it?Then I can get some bonemeal in first?
Yes the rail is going on the left,in the meantime it's hands and knees, and backside!!
😄😄, you're right @Purplerain ! but what a stunning sight!!

@Purplerain,..you are right,..our native swans must be very pleased when the Hooper's head back to Iceland,..its awesome to see so many swans and to hear the sound of all of them at once,..i would probably change my mind about the sound were i living closer to the river.
@Valley Gardener,..thanks for the description of your garden,..now i can see it in my mind when you are posting,..i was trying to figure out what those pink flowers are and have to admit i have not come across them before,..when you get a close up of them have a go at getting the name from 'Plant ID here in the Forum',..you can be sure someone will know them.
Oh i would wait until the Winter is over and even then wait until the frosts have finished before moving that rose.
Sorry to find you have so much of a struggle getting about in the garden,..you are a fighter indeed,..plus a dedicated gardener,..my compliments to you.
