  • I love your neighbours garden,just enough to look after,I wish my neighbours garden looked like that,one side rubble and building stuff,other side left to go wild as he has two poor dogs that never get walked.
    Beautiful pics philip,I love those dark velvety looking nasturtiums.Do you just spray the ground as from now with the been oil?

    @nultyphilip224 It would be interesting to know how you treat all your plants in the winter to eliminate your "unwanted residents". Think your neighbour will have more plants in their garden than you have in yours soon  :) Nasturtiums certainly brighten up a garden even if they are inclined to take over at times.
  • Sorry about the typo, meant to be Neem Oil .😁😁

    @Valley Gardener,

    Its seldom a gardener is blessed to have a gardener neighbour on each side of ones own garden,..it tends to be at least one rubbish garden,..or worse.

    If i am heading to Dublin on the east coast or Galway on the west coast,..by train,..i always purchase a garden magazine if it has a free packet of seeds lol.

    The Nasturtiums in the images above were from that source and happily a mixed species and when in full bloom they were very impressive.

    At present i use Slug Pellets and spread them through the garden,..my Hedgehogs are hibernating now so there is no chance they would eat the dead Slugs who ate and died from Slug Pellets,..come Spring i stop using the Slug Pellets,..around then my Hedgehogs wake up,.. i then use the Mix of Neem Oil on the foliage of all of my plants,..in my case even close to the ground as the Delphinium and Lupine young foliage are just showing above the surface,..so come Spring there won't be a horde of Slugs and Snails around,..most people wait until Spring to get rid of the Slugs and Snails but by the time they have got rid of them the damage is done and young foliage is well and truly damaged or plants eaten beyond rescue.

    In the past i have had to use Liquid Slug Killer when we had a long spell of damp weather and Slugs and Snails arrived from the gardens on either side of me,..using a fine spray the liquid remained mostly on the foliage and the Hedgehogs never suffered any discomfort.

         @Fran IOM,

          I think the response to @Valley Gardener should cover your query as to how i treat        all my plants in Winter,..i mentioned in the Forum of late that due to our mild weather i notice Snails being active around the place,..though if we get a spell of heavy frost or snow that should give them something to go into hiding lol.

    Nasturtiums are spectacular when in full bloom and very tasty in a salad or just to freshen up a dry mouth,..the leaves are like Horseradish or White Turnip in taste,..the flower less hot but with a touch of being sweet,..as soon as mine appear in the garden i dig them up and plant them in a container so i can control them otherwise its takeover time by them,..even after they are finished blooming and their season is over the dried foliage is like twine still clinging around what ever was close to them,..they are worth having for a show of colour.

    We've just been to stay with our family (daughter, son in law and 2 little granddaughters) in Oranmore, south of Galway, for the New Year.  It must have been very mild on the West coast of Ireland because the first daffodils are out, and the grass is still growing.  Lovely to see Spring beginning to arrive - hopefully we'll see a bit of green in Northern England soon...
    Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • @Liriodendron,..Delighted you paid a visit to your family in Oranmore,..you were not too far away from where i live as its between Oranmore and the Midlands,..yes very mild weather all around and plants coming into bloom,..i just hope the weather doesn't turn very cold between now and March,..we often have snow and heavy frost in Feb/Mar.

    I hope you enjoyed your visit and are looking forward to the next visit.

    Thank you, @nultyphilip224!  Yes, we had a lovely time, if somewhat exhausting... the granddaughters are 4 and 7, and permanently on the go.  Wouldn't have it any other way!  They've just learnt to ride proper bikes, so grandparents have to run along behind them making sure they don't ride into wheelie bins etc...

    We love Ireland.  Our daughter and family have lived in Oranmore for 4 years now - our son in law works at the Marine Institute - and we're very tempted to move across ourselves, in fact.   :)

  • @ Liriodendron,..Ah i can see there are several attractions that would draw you to moving to Oranmore,..Daughter,..Grandchildren,..close to the sea,..its the sort of place i would like myself,..i am sure there would be a few houses for sale in the area and not far from the railway station,..place the move on top of your list,..providing you can keep up with granddaughters lol.

    Just coming into bloom now are my Pulmonaria officinalis 'Lungworth,..image captured today.
