You're absolutely right @Fran IOM We couldn't be without a cat,so would do the same,a nice older cat from CPL,or some other rescue place. The two we have now are 9 and 8,so hopefully a few more years for them and us!😊

Ps. My Nasturtiums last year were covered in blackfly, and I couldn't get rid of them,I planted seeds on top of the wall, thinking how pretty they would look tumbling down but it wasn't to be as they looked awful! I wonder if there is a type that repel blackfly?!!!
These were called Little Gem,so Dwarf ones. I wonder if @nultyphilip224 knows of a better one?  His looked good........as does everything!
    😊😊

  • Ah! Lovely photos, we've always had cats and a dog or two. The two we now have will be the last, unless we get one to grow old with us!
Ps. The rescued rose is allowed to stay with me,she can see it from her kitchen window so that's good!
@Valley Gardener,..same problem with me as well,..my last dog,..in fact its a worry as to what would happen to Foxy Molly should i go before her,..calculating her age now with mine she will outlast me by many years,..recently i had to make a new will and of course one main point was who would benefit?,..nobody passed the test as far as i was concerned as to who would/could look after Foxy Molly,..so everything goes to the Animal Rescue People,..they charge 100 euro to people taking on a rescue animal and check that the potential owner is good enough,..still one always worries about pets.

Oh that's good news that you keep the rescued rose bush,..plus your neighbour can still see her rose.

  • We've split everything into equal fours,Daughter,Granddaughter,Grandson and a little cat rescue place not far away, with the proviso they take in our cats! My daughter would have them, but she lives too near a busy road. I also think they will outlive us @nultyphilip224. 😢

Love to see cats and dogs together. Our Labrador and cat get on well but I have yet to see them sleep together.
Love your idea with the nasturtiums @nultyphilip224. I planted seeds the year before last and decided not to bother last year, although they are so colourful, but they still came up despite the fact I thought I had got rid of them. Have yet to remove them as they are choking a lot of other plants. Will consider your idea this year if I can find the room. No doubt the others will make a reappearance.
@Valley Gardener If I were without a cat now I would have to have an old rescued one as too old myself for a kitten.  :)
@Fran IOM,..My dogs always looked guilty when i looked at them cuddled up together,..i guess it was the cats making use of the dogs body heat,..like a hot water bottle.

Nasturtiums stay in the garden for years after the initial seed sowing,..those plants keep re seeding,..mine has for years,..they look great when kept well watered but they can cover other plants from getting sun,..i find its best to have them in a container or someplace away from other plants.

I see you are in the same predicament as me,.. about if you were taking on a kitten,..or puppy.

For the past 24 years i have had cats aplenty and now on my third dog.

Hudson who lived for 18 years.

Molly The Springer lived for 13 years.

Within 9 days of Molly the Springer passing away on August 16th 2017 i took on Foxy Molly on August 25th 2017.

@Valley Gardener,..regardless of watching the ages of pets and ourselves i bet neither of us would be without a pet,..there would be a huge void without one.

Neem Oil is a great deterrent,..it will get rid of all insects like greenfly/blackfly/whitefly and so forth,..1 tablespoon of Neem Oil and 1 tablespoon of liquid soap in 1 litre of water,..spray on a dull day and use often,..doesn't harm Bees or Butterflies,..most Pharmacies sell the Neem Oil,..in pure form or mixed it works,..cost is about 12 euro,..one small bottle lasts me throughout the season.

Liquid Soap on its own,.. mixed with water of course,.. works quite well on roses if you can not get Neem Oil.

  • Just a few images,..to give you some colour,.. of some of my excess plants that i planted in my neighbours garden,..all grown from seeds,..freebies for my neighbour,..this garden only had grass.

@nultyphilip224 You never cease to amaze me. What a lucky neighbour to have a garden transformed. Hope they are appreciative.
@Valley Gardener I know what you mean about having ideas as to what would look nice and it doesn't turn out like the vision you had! Maybe you can try again hopefully without the blackfly. Looks like I have got my nasturtiums to stay so may try getting them to grow up the privet hedge above this time or the way that Philip has grown them. What's the bet they won't appear this summer  ;)
  • I will get the Neem Oil, I've always liked Nasturtiums, something to do with childhood, and my Dad giving me easy seeds to grow in a tiny patch of garden he allowed me. Them, and Love in the Mist!! I don't think I had blackfly then!!!

My Dad always gave me cornflower seeds to plant and sure enough they would flourish.
Maybe there were only slugs and snails around at that time as I can't remember any other types of problems, not that I would be of an age to know, but no doubt blackfly existed.
  • @alley Gardener,...@Fran IOM,..the thing about Blackfly is that they are already in the garden now but in egg form,..they hatch in Spring,..so with them as with Slugs and Snails and any others begin your attack before Spring,..as it is now in Winter i treat against all of them on any dry day,..by Spring i will have eliminated most of the unwanted residents in my garden,..however the battle will continue as i get unwanted visitors from other gardens who decide they should eat my plants  :).

As we are mentioning Nasturtiums,..some more images of the excess plants i planted in my neighbours garden.
