Not been on for a few days as when it was dry I was busy replacing the Allotment shed roof. It's a job I wanted to do for a long time & in spite of 3 dry days in a row the soil was too wet to plant anything. Looking back I think we are all expressing the same frustrations. Even the seedlings in the greenhouse have slowed down. Hoping the forecast for next week is accurate might actually get something done on the ground.
Having bought a packet of wildflower seeds, I tackled my lawn meadow today. Specifically areas that had returned to its (thick) original lawn grass. I raked this up, improved the soil and then scattered some wildflower seeds over the area. I finished off with a light layer of topsoil and firming in. Here's hoping!
I have found that a lawn meadow is forever changing and throws up some surprises, e.g. I was presented with a large quantity of nigella flowers from seeds sown several years before that I had forgotten about! Here is a photo of them - they were actually a pale blue. (In the background is a Japanese maple and a virginia creeper. To the far left, part of my hydrangea bush; the pink flowers clash with the colour of the young maple, hence the area of blue inbetween them! I would prefer them to be blue but don't want to buy a huge bag of anything just to do this small bush).
A 'weed' is just a plant in the wrong place - subjective!
That looks lovely Wild Flower and must be heaven for all the little creatures that make their home in your garden. We have just given the thumbs up to having our grassy field partially converted into a wildflower meadow. The results should be good for next year - here's hoping. I did lots of little jobs like dividing a woody geum Cooky, planting more verbena cuttings, potting up 3 new plug clematis Guernsey Cream whilst OH washed his beloved car and helped with some of the heavy lifting.

I sowed a pile of half hardy annuals in the greenhouse on Sunday. The first ones to germinate were pink Hawksbeard, Crepis rubra, after 3 days. I am delighted. Never grown it before so this is a first. Has anyone tried it before?

We've had more rain today (and a visit to the dentist) so didn't get out in the garden till late afternoon. We did have lots of new decking boards and extra tough root control fabric delivered - we are going to have the poshest, most expensive raised veg beds you can imagine! I can't calculate the cost per potato but it better be worth it.
