Gg. Shame the roof can't be repaired, I think it would look fab with some artistic graffiti on the sides and used as a shelter from the rain, probably far more secure than a wooden shed. We'd love a container on our allotments.
Sowed seakale seeds on kitchen roll and put container on radiator. Only about 30 seeds in the packet. I'll give them a few weeks to see if they germinate, they obviously can't sit on the radiator for 12mths.:)
That would be good idea for container - Zoomer will sort out artichokes tomorrow dig them out and package and send to you
Went to the plot bit of strimming took photos of tree buds, trying to tie back some brambles as windy weather has made them lean forward, found a wierd metal thing in ground just off plot like part of a machine with saw like things, while trying to re-dig and sow some wild flower seeds bit next to brambles
Hope make area look better and smell nicer as council bin outside fences on path and lots of dog poo bags get put into it as next to field - some night scented stock -most old seeds so will see if anything happens - added a few daffs to planter as hyacinth bulbs had rotted away
Back to digging out the tarpaulin thing tomorrow think it does under path between plots so may have to cut to edge of plot with knife
Went to AGM for allotment today Going to put up 2 more CCTV cameras up and continue putting out Rat bait which Ass will now buy Paid rent £55 Hoping to go to plot tomorrow for some jobs
Hi Claire, well done you for having an allotment. I’m lucky enough to have my plot in my back yard. Been veg growing for 12 years in there and as you go on you experience highs and lows and soon learn what to bother growing and what not too in your soil and with the time you have to attend to it etc. My biggest plus is when I put my beds in. They are not raised beds in the strictest sense, just bits of wood around areas dug over. Then I just strim in between the beds. It saves walking over your ground, i keeps mulch where you want it, you can feed just the bed and you can water just the bed. I always grow charlotte potatoes, just a few rows for us and family. Beside my charlottes in the same bed I plant fine beans and runners up teepees of canes. I used to start them early from seed in cold greenhouse but mice always find their way in an feast on them, so in recent years I start them in the ground. They are a little slower but soon catch up. I have several beds, some small ones too. I grow courgettes, broadbeans, plus fruit, raspberries, red currant bush, blackcurrant, gooseberry and blueberries. I freeze the fruit that I can’t eat with my breakfast and enjoy that through the winter months. I’m lucky enough to have a small net tunnel too, I grow salad leaves in there. We have pigeons so anything like that gets eaten by them, but they don’t eat the beans or courgettes. I have grown charlotte in the same bed for the past 12 years with no issues. It was funny because I saw GW last week and Monty was digging in his potatoes without mounding up, this is how I have always done my charlottes. I dig in compost as I turn the soil over. Then I rake it over, then I lau my potatoes in a line with gap between them and then just using a trowel I dig a deep hole probably 9-10” a drop a seed potato in, then just cover over. The reason you mound up is to stop the light getting to your crop. If your potatoes get light, they will turn green and are poisonus to eat then. Hope the above helps, will attach a pic of my beds. Also have you watched Alice Fowler? I now grown flowers in with my veg to help the bees and butterflies but also it looks soooo pretty. all the best, Loana
I’m struggling to upload a picture, says I have none? Will keep trying, got it! You can see my spring bulbs, hellebores and rhubarb, plus I use little beds in the net tunnel too. I took this pic just now, I am also growing a few dahlia’s in a bed too 😉
