Does anyone else feel the allotment pressure? It is my first year, got a plot in Jan that had been abandoned for 2 years. I have cleared it and put in an extra 5 raised beds. I have bought a strimmer to keep the weeds down and I have managed to cover half the plot in wood chip that had been dropped off one evening. I am trying to go twice a week and I love it when I am there. People have been gossiping a bit about other plot holders who 'don't have enough in the ground' or 'haven't made enough use of the space' and they have been saying that these people have had a warning that they may be kicked off. I did have a visit from one warden and he on the whole has been really nice to me, but while I was there he did say that the council lady in charge would complain about one of my paths being too wide and not using enough of the space. I need to get a wheelbarrow up there however. After typing this all out I know I need to stop listening to the gossip and just keep going little and often and working on it, and enjoying it, as much as i can, but what I am wondering is, does anyone else experience this at their allotment? It has made me feel a bit pressured really, I have never experienced weeds and thistles like it before and it has made me panic a tad, although I am doing my best.
Take no notice of what others say, we always have a few here that want to make themselves heard we just listen then ignore generally the rule is to keep two thirds in cultivation but it should tell you in your contract and most councils understand that in the first year or so that may not be possible particularly if the site was out of cultivation for some time.
As for paths 600 mm or 2 feet wide is a good size to work with, it allows you and a barrow to move around comfortably.
This is my plot and as you can see I have hard paved area a large poly tunnel and gravel paths, the rules say one shed no bigger than 8 ft x 6 ft and a green house or tunnel of the same size I have two sheds and the tunnel is 20 ft x 12 ft approx all with the written permission of the council. so not so much rules as guide lines

Thanks ever so much for your advice and photos. Your plot looks great. Thanks for the path measurements too. I shall stick to those. You are right about not listening to people; I think my paths are fine and about two thirds of the plot is being used - yay! :-)
Hello, I'm hopefully getting an allotment soon! Received a letter from the Town council offering me a half plot (145 sqyd) a week ago. I phoned, but they've got people off sick and the person who usually deals with allotments is on holiday so I haven't been able to view it yet.
Went to have a peek through the gate yesterday morning though, it looks good in there and well looked after. Only 5 minute walk from my house.
Very pleasantly surprised - only sent in the form to be added to the waiting list at the end of April. Expected it to take years!
