What rotten luck, Lily P, getting 'flu after having the 'flu jab. I hope he suffers less with it than if he hadn't had the jab.

I'm thinking of having the jab when we go to England on Thursday, living in France I will pay for it though. I should have a free one here but I can't face waiting in a full surgery of coughing patients for 2 hours. No appointments system. OH has already had his, in Boots.

Good news about my sewing machine. The lady in the shop dismantled something and put it back and now it works. She said something had got a tiny bit displaced when I went over a thick seam and the needle broke. The needle may not have been completely straight. She said that can happen with old needles. They also told me that the guarantee is 5 years with that machine, not 2 years.

OH's GP doesn't do appointments either Busy but mine does.  Need to have my shingles jab and see about a specialist for the feet altho I'm also going to try the turmeric daily dose.   Flu jabs free but the shingles cost us 80€ each cos I didn't want to wait till we're 70.  Nasty stuff and definitely worth avoiding.

Good news about the machine.  Hope you've bought lots of new needles.  I have just finished Possum's first smart blouse which has 9 buttonholes, all exactly the same.   Got to love this new machine!  I shall now make another with elbow length sleeves for spring - that'll save 4 buttonholes - no cuffs!

OK Dove - next questions.  Oils or water colours?  Landscape?  Wildlife?  Portraits?  Still life?  Just being nosy so feel free to ignore.  I'm good at painting furniture and walls but haven't any artistic talent so am curious about other people's - like Pat with her drawings and Busy with her water colours.

LP - they do say feed a cold and starve a fever so maybe OH just gt ahead of himself.  Seriously tho, we all need lots of fresh vitamins and minerals at this time of year.

Forgot to mention that Cosmos helped me choose the buttons!   Helpful chap.

That cabbage pie with eggs sounds like it's missing some salmon!

Obelixx I paint in oils, usually on canvas .... sort of abstracted botanical forms.

Obelixx, I looked up Russian cabbage pie on line.  Some people seem to add salmon to the basic recipe - Dacha can tell us if the recipe is different in widespread parts of Russia, perhaps?  And some have a puff pastry top, whilst others are layered with batter consisting of eggs, sour cream, mayonnaise and flour.  image

Great that your sewing machine is back in service, Lizzie.  Mine needs a new foot control, I think - it varies its speed of stitching without any input from me.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Me too Liri.   Lots of variations out there and it looks good but far too calorific for my January clean out.   Lots of baby Savoy cabbages perking up in the veggie plot at the mo and ready to pick from about the weekend  so I'll have to find some leaner recipes.   There are some flower sprouts and kale in another bed but they won't be ready for weeks yet assuming they decide to grow after surviving drought and then storms.

What are you painting next then Dove?

OH has just told me he'd like another gilet thingy for golf but with more sensible pockets.  Between him, Possum, patchwork homework and new curtains for 5 more rooms, I may be tied to my machine forever.

Your paintings sound lovely Dove. I have only ever used watercolour, not oil or acrylic, so I’d love to see some your paintings. They sound different. A friend gave me some of that Iris about 10 years ago, and it’s still alive, but hasn’t ever produced flowers. I was really waiting for the interesting seed pods. Typical.

    Sweet dreams all.

  • Dove....the cabbage pie MIL makes is not the one with boiled eggs.....she first boils the cabbage in milk .......chopped up and the adds fried onions .....the pastry is made with margarine (not butter!) with some yeast added ......will send a pic of the finished result later image

Would love to see some pics of your paintings also...
