It's still raining here, but the flooding in the town has subsided; although the river was very full, it was actually surface water flooding this time - the road drains couldn't cope with the water sheeting down off the hills. A lot of public-spirited people turned out to clear drain covers and collect sandbags for vulnerable houses. There's a growing realisation that we all need to take responsibility for jobs which used to be done by the council, when they had the money...
Happy birthday, Nanny B!

Given that Norfolk is getting rid of all our PCSOs, the mind boggles about the sort of thing that may be set up by folks doing it DIY fashion .......... after all, I thought that the whole point about local councils was that they arelocal people getting together and taking responsibiity for things that need doing, for the common good ... in a democratic way ...........
It's just that whichever political party happens to be in control in Westminster at the time, brings in controls to stop LAs doing what their electorate wants in order to manipulate events without it (they think) reflecting badly on the party in power at Westminster.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Or it's badly run and inefficient councils using cuts in govt funding to excuse cuts at home. Either way, there is a lack of long term thinking involved but I'm all for communities taking care of themselves as much as they can. Having it done for you does nothing for community spirit.
Torrid night here with my system battling to expel some pesky bug whichever way it could and I've been bitten again so when I wasn't in the bathroom I was applying ointment and trying not to scratch. Windy night too with odd drops of rain. Just enough to make for paw marks on my clean floor.
As I was feeling crook yesterday pm I didn't go walkie but dis let my fingers do the walking round a seed site. The big local nursery has a range of obvious things at high prices - 30€+ for a we shrub or tree in a 5l pot so I've decided to grow my own on the ground that babies will catch up fast and be ready for their new home from the start with no issues acclimatising.
Also bought some magnesium tabs after bad cramps and the packet claims they are also good with insomnia and improving sleep quality so maybe worth trying NB and Hosta.
Happy Birthday Nanny B. Hope you have a lovely day.
Glad you're feeling better today LP and hope your defences work Liri.
Shame about WW's hands but maybe this job can lead to something less strenuous but still plant related.
Now to crawl back under a blanket. Enjoy your Sunday everyone, whatever you're up to.

looks like you guys are having some bad weather .....sorry to say it's absolutely glorious here ...+3 and great working weather.....got another few hours of clearing up the leaves......I hate them and love them......I can now see the lake from the bedroom window
Dacha says " absolutely glorious here ...+3 and great working weather." what number comes after the 3?
I spoke with one of the drivers who was out yesterday.
The sea was over the wall at Boscastle, in Trebarwith the door slammed back on his hand so hard he thought he'd broken his fingers " At one point I was almost in tears. I had no phone signal and no sat nav and I couldn't find the house in the dark. I thought I'd just give up and go home"
Dove & Obelixx, I agree with you both about local councils. But here the problem seems to be that they have become reactive rather than proactive, especially with drain cleaning and leaf sweeping; I'm quite sure that the drain sucker thing will be out today, clearing clogged drains along the area which flooded. I'd have thought that in a steep-sided valley where flooding is a regular problem, keeping the drainage system clean all year would be a pre-requisite - we locals can clear away leaves, but not clear the drains under the road... but hey, what do I know?
It sounds as if your drivers are heros, Hosta!

Liri, it's great when people cooperate for the common good
LP< there was talk of the NTS making it free entry to Culzean grounds as many families have been going to Dumfries House instead.
Hope you will feel better for the family visit.

I've been out doing some leaf clearing and there's a marked drop in temperature here today. Feet and hands are cold.
