The ones who regard sick leave as extra holidays spoil it for the hard workers. The company I worked for gave everyone six weeks paid sick plus four weeks holiday plus eight bank holidays. Most of the staff had been there a long time. A new person started, and never put in a full week. Over a year she took the full amount of sick time in odd days for non specific illnesses. The others were getting fed up with it, and started doing the same. I fired the new one, and we altered the sick allowance to three weeks, and any other was subject to approval by a director. Someone needing a hysterectomy but had hardly had a day off in years got three months sick on full pay. The ones not coming in due to a hangover didn't get paid. A large company cannot do it. A small company cannot afford to have shirkers who throw sickies on a regular basis. Yes, I was regarded as either "that bloody woman" or a B!!**. Normal service resumed. I have often sent home people who are too sick to be there, and they were paid for it. I do not think people who are genuinely ill should be penalised.
It is warm - but it's clouded over now so I'll cut the grass in a bit.
We were allowed up to10 days uncertified sick leave per annum when I started in the civil service. In our small town office very few people took more than the odd day off for a cold or whatever.
Then a girl arrived from London and she would say things like "Oh - I've not had all my 10 days - don't want to lose them" She regarded it as an additional 2 weeks leave - as did everyone else in her previous London office. Needless to say others started copying her - she was a bl$$dy nightmare to manage. She used to pay people the benefits she thought they deserved rather than what they were entitled to...
I tried to start disciplinary proceedings against her - but this was the Civil Service in the 70's and the unions were strong and the management was weak.
LILY P - so sorry to hear about your eye - we all need to take note. Hope you make a full recovery soon - frightening.
P'Doc - forgot to wish you a Happy Birthday earlier - hope you are having a good day

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
LilyP ((huge hugs)) so sorry you got attacked by the euphorbia ... I've not had any in my garden since being badly burned on the legs as a child .. however I do love them so this summer I'm planting euphorbias in our Sunny Corner ..... I had hoped that now I'm 27 I was old enough not to do anything dangerous with them, but ................
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Happy Birthday punk doc, hope you enjoyed your cake and had a lovely lunch. We have been house sitting for a friend and my computer does not get a signal there. Hope every one is well
No euphorbias here - ever - but there will be canes. I shall have to be inventive as I have yet to find any protective tops.
We have been to buy my compost and ended up needing 2 trolleys - 1 for 5 bags of compost and the other for 2 rolls of mesh fencing, 5 posts - all they had in stock, a roll of wire and some tensioners and a Falstaff rose at 20% off and 3 gazanias at 15% off plus 12 plugs of Romanesco. They had a 20% off one item of your choice too so OH treated himself to some new, sturdy ankle boots for walking the dogs.
I have a blister on top of my toe so am tooling around in flip flops which are not good for walking the dogs in our unpaved country lanes so am off to sand a "bonnetière" which is half wardrobe, half drawers and a shelf with an inset mirror. Defintely one of the more quirky ones.
I hope your eye does heal properly LP. Joyce - it's easy to eat a bit too much when you haven't had to cook it. I hope you enjoyed it.
RG - we started off with one personnel gofer to manage hiring conditions for 200 people and everything was fine till we became 300 staff. She became 2 and then 3 and before we knew it we had 1000 employees in different sites and imported an ambitious (hard as nails) personnel director who set up and empire and called it HR. Nightmare.
It would be more productive to offer extra days of holiday to those who do not take sick leave.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
Evening all, Been out in the garden for most of the day. Cut back the euphorbias this morning (wore long sleeved top, gloves and glasses) no problems. Hope the eye heals quickly LP. Planted out most of the plants in the greenhouse, just a few more pots to do but I need more compost so they will have to wait until Friday.
The last of the dahlias are now showing so no losses this winter.
Hope everone is enjoying the sunshine. Need to go and water the back garden now so catch you later.
It's been a tiring but happy day at Chelsea. I spoke to lots of defiant, cheerfully optimistic people in the queue patiently waiting for the gates to open, having bags searched and being sniffed by police dogs, quietly determined not to let the terrorists win.
Lots to say but maybe there's a separate Chelsea thread by now... I'll look tomorrow when I get home. I had a brief chat with Chris Beardshaw, who seems a nice chap. I liked his garden more than the judges did!
Now I've got to slim down the number of catalogues in my rucksack before leaving in the morning, or I won't be able to carry it!
Best wishes for your eye, Lily P. Hope it's soon back to normal.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

So much for thinking I had parked in the shade!

LP, very nasty burn to your eye.
OH used to treat a lot of patients who got eye injuries from garden canes. It's important to put protection over the tops of them.
My school friend was here today and we had a lovely lunch out.....why do I always come back stuffed?
