No, haven't weighed him Mark. If it is the same one we've seen over the last few months then 'he' is quite a large chap so hopefully he'll be fine. We are keeping the Spikes dry food going which is being eaten every night although last night I noticed some was left. Maybe he was spooked by the camera or just had had his fill.

  • I am surprised that your Horace is still active and about at night Dave.  However as Mark says he will be stocking up on your food so keep on with your feeding.

We haven't seen our hog for a few nights now, and I am quite concerned.  We haven't had any snow/ice/frosts here as yet but it is getting down to 3 or 4 degrees at night.  I had hoped he would have carried on visiting us for a while yet.

Just like philippa's, mine has been absent for a couple of weeks, with no sign of him on any of the cameras, I still keep putting food and water out on a regular basis, but the only thing that eats it is a rather chubby Field Mouse image

Well, second night with the camera and it seems not only do we have Horace but we have Henrietta too (or two Horaces, or two Henriettas lol)!

Have put out extra food tonight as these guys were visiting between 6.30pm and 3am and seemingly looking for more after they had eaten the normal allocation.

  • Very cool. Our Sonic has been absent for 4/5 nights now though i'm not worried as i last weighed her at over 650g

    Super shots, Dave image

To my surprise Hoggy turned up last night, he'd been absent for about 3 weeks, so good to see him on the camera looking fit and well, he had a good feed and cleared all 3 bowls.

Good news Sheps & a great reminder that we should continue to supply food in the winter months even if let untouched for weeks at a time, as the rescue says - hibernation is not a constant state. The mild weather from the jet stream has been known to see them rise as displayed in the Winterwatch video before settling down again. Particularly helpful for underweight hogs which will continue to feed up until as late as January.

Horace is still about but Henrietta seems to have been a one-off. Visiting for shorter durations and eating less food now. Very cold last few nights, especially last night, -3C when he turned up at 11pm.

Wise words indeed, Mark...I for one will be supplying fresh food and water through until springtime.

Super shot, Dave...and very pleased to see Horace alive and well, though you would have thought this cold spell would have perked his interest in hibernation.

It's been -4C here and no sign of Hoggy for the last few nights, but the little Wood Mouse continues to turn up every night and eats his fill of the food in the Hoggy box, he then makes loads of journeys caching the leftover food in his larder.
