hello all, caught hedgehog on camera all week, feeding well even scared a couple of rats off!! go Horatio snuffles!, yeh that's what we've named him. but to my delight and surprise, we caught two on camera the other night but not sure if they are a mating couple as they were just sort of snorting at each other with the smaller hog backing away from the bigger one. I'm obviously no expert so I would love to know if you think its a male and female?

its been lovely in the lockdown to think about and create more opportunities to bring wildlife into the garden. we always feed the birds even though they can be very selective about what birdseed they eat and what they throw out!. We are really lucky to live opposite a nature pond and are often visited by a pheasant, I've named him Prince. well, that's about all from nature trail in Northumberland. stay safe and well. Regards M

Nature is all around us, and I pity those who don't notice the beauty of it.  I believe that as we age we have the time to enjoy what other's don't notice.  Having said that I remember as a child I used to collect butterflies, caterpillars, beetles etc. I didn't have many toys but found nature all absorbing.

Last night I was sitting in the conservatory from 9pm. At 10pm hoggie came, spent 15 minutes eating had a drink and then went into the boarder under the trees ( favourite spot and where I have moved the hog house to) Half an hour later another hog appeared, had a drink and looked at the food station giving it a good sniff, but decided not to go in. It then went and rooted about up and down the fence line until leaving by the side gate, at that moment the first hog came out sniffing where the other had been and went to eat more food. This hog went into the food at 10pm, 11pm,12pm,3am,3.30am, and 4.15am. It is easy to see as in the infrared camera it has a large pale patch of spines, so it must stay in the garden most of the night, and I haven't disturbed the hog house to see if it's now in residence. 😁 And no I didn't stay up all night.😆

Unfortunately l'm not able to post the photo, but the link below shows the state of a hedgehog brought to my local rescue, covered in dried mud. He was apparently found in a trench where he'd been for several days, and to be honest the outlook is not looking good.
I know l've said this before, but please check any holes, trenches etc that have been left open overnight,  and pass the message on to friends and neighbours 🦔

The hog house that we made last autumn was ignored by the hogs as a place to hibernate.  Then the other day I saw that a hog had slept in it, and the bedding was depressed in the middle.  Today I have noticed some greenery that has been gathered and taken inside.  I think that a hog is in residence, because there is quite a mound of leaves etc.  Perhaps this will be a maternity home.  I shall keep a watch on it:  gestation is, apparently, 30 - 40 days.  Meanwhile, we have seen three hogs eating each evening one much larger (presumably the boar) and two smaller ones - so fingers crossed.

Thought you might like to see the video from my local rescue of a little hoglet being fed (hopefully the link works).
The lady who runs it is still doing the majority of work on her own with some help from her husband and daughter. These hedgehogs still need help !

On the night camera last night saw a hog ( I call patch) drinking from the bird bath as usual, when along comes fat cat ( an unknown slate blue I've given this name) who walks up to the bowl and proceeded to drink with the hog.
Same cat later that night stood looking around in front of camera, suddenly jumps and runs. Only then can you see patch running up the patio towards the cat. Never got anywhere near said cat and was only heading for the door to the feed station. Wonder if said cat has had a run in with a hedgehog before! But it sure took off in a hurry.😂

I couldn't get them all together, there were four hedgehogs in our garden last evening.  They pick up the fallen bits from the birdfeeders before coming to their bowl of Spikes with chopped apple. There are three in this picture and two in the bottom picture, there were four altogether.
