Horace has returned (maybe he never went away?). I guess they ought to be hibernating soon although it's so mild at the moment they might not be in any rush. Nice to have 'him' back, just have to take extra precautions with Dudley the furry terrorist before he goes out for his late night wee. I don't think Horace appreciated his 'welcome' last night image

3rd post down, people might find interesting about how they can still rise in late autumn/winter to feed and then go back to sleep possibly in a new site. It shows how we must still keep food out over winter for milder periods. image

Good defence practice Dave, mine did the same with my border terrier pup. The border was more terrified puppy training at 3am image I let a light on 30 seconds before he goes out, the hog has learnt to disappear.

  • I do the same Mark - outside light switched on shortly before dog and pup go out and hogs disappear although the older dog can smell them. Saw a hog feeding last night and although not as much food is being taken the feeder is visited every night. I assume it's maybe just one hog not hibernating yet because it has been so mild. Going to set up the camera again when new batteries arrive!

Yes, we had also been using the light-on trick but as Horace had (seemingly) been awol for a few weeks he caught us unawares last night. Will resume the process of turning the lights on first and will put some food out tonight as we'd also stopped that a few weeks back.

  • Sonic has still been at the food every night recently. She's a good weight now too, over 600g, and seems pretty healthy. Saw her feeding last Friday night so brought her in to be weighed and put her in a pyrex bowl to see she was a girl image

  • She looks healthy Tom, with her damp nose and bright eyes.  You have done a good job of feeding her up over the past few weeks.  Hopefully she will make it through the winter and reward you with a little family to feed next year!

Well I treated myself to a new toy for my birthday thanks to the folks' contribution. An Apeman H68 'Hunting' camera. Got it set up last evening and first night Horace appeared on cue! Chuffed.

Will try the video out tonight and adjust the date / time settings. A little surprised that Horace is still out and about and not hibernating. We've had zero /sub-zero temps the last few nights?

Brilliant choice Dave! Have you managed to weigh Horace yet? It's possible he is still waiting to stock up for winter so as long as food is continually supplied he will keep bulking. image There's no doubt you are his lifeline at present, much of his natural food has disappeared with the cold.
