Its great that you can help the Fairylets Fairy, but your right it helps to have realistic expectations and some skills like homemade cooking, DIY etc to be as self sufficient as possible. Step womble was brought up in a similar fashion. We never hid how tough things were, she knew to work hard at school to give herself the best start possible. She's just turned 22 and has bought a flat with her boyfriend and we are so proud of what a lovely, hard working, grounded and kind person she is...gush! imageimage

Wonkey, I honestly feel sorry for your particular generation, you missed out when the economy suddenly went pear shaped. We had gone through the war and the austerity after, our parents had the struggle of getting me through school until 16, the most we could hope for, university was what Southeners did. We had to learn money management the hard way, it also gave us the urge to better yourself, Dad would tell me no one owed me a living, if you get a days pay do a days work and my wife Joan worked at her school for twenty odd years, she handled the money very well, in time we fulfilled most of our wishes, you will never complete the bucket list we did have fun trying. We did help our children and they paid us back, they are comfortably settled, now the grandchildren need help and I do not expect a return, they work to stand still. Although they appear to have it all, they do not, what to us were luxeries are things they must have or fall off the cliff. It is hard for me to watch, we were programmed for a hard life they are not, they will not always accept help saying they will cut down on something, I love them for that attitude.

    Frank.

Nice to see things sprouting isn't it? Our plants might head back  underground by the end of the week if the forecast's right. Snow.

Nice when young people work hard for what they have, and can get ahead. So many just expect it, for no effort. It's also much more satisfying when you reap the rewards of your own labours- as gardeners always know... image

Just saw your post re Mr Wonder Dove. Been a fan since I was a teenager. More talent in his little finger than most people can ever hope to have in a lifetime. It's a cracking song - perfect for shaking all sorts of things - and not always intentionally....image

Frank your right, its a different world...things that one wouldn't think are essential to living such as the internet, are as you can't do banking, seek employment or correspond without it! The cost of living is as such that when I get my months wages, I have all my bills go out immediately and whatever is left is for food...nothing left for anything but essentials. I don't go to hairdressers,we doing eat out...my cooking is better! image but its nice to have the option but that's just the way it is. Like I say, despite everything, we have a happy life...relatively healthy, and have each other and wonderful family.... I did get made redundant the other week, that's another thing, stable employment is rare here, but way to proud to sign on and am doing gardening rounds and window cleaning to pay the bills.Never been scared of hard work! image

Your family are blessed to have such an understanding and enlightened person at its head! And your fantastic daughter Fairy, shows that your wise lessons were heeded and passed on image

Don't want snow Fairy! Window cleaning Friday! image two weeks ago couldn't feel my hands for four hours!

Wonks - you can get little heat pads for putting inside gloves - the ones you squish about to activate. I wonder if they'd be any good to you - assuming you can wear gloves? Walkers use them - they're readily available. I don't really use them, but they're useful things to carry in the ruckie for emergency purposes. image

Good plan for chilly gardening days Fairy but it wouldn't work for window cleaning, runpbber gloves are best as they are at least waterproof! image thanks for the tip though, I'll look some out for the chilly seasons!

Span bol here too, freezer job image bath and bed for me, totally bushed with grass scratches all up my forearms, night night

Silk liners inside the rubber gloves might help too - if there's room for them image

I'm off as well - after washing the dishes anyway....image

So much for bloody summer temperatures, we are due snow on Thursday.

Who was talking about Mr. Wonder, a true great." Living for the City", off Innervisions, is one of my all time favourites.

I look at my nephews and nieces, mostly in their teens and twenties, and I am not sure what the future holds for them.

Don't if you have noticed Steve Hewlett died today. He was a radio presenter, who has been doing interviews with Eddy Mair each week to discuss how his cancer treatment was going. Some of it was truly moving.

pdoc,  I had been listening to Steve's interviews with Eddie Mair and reading his articles in the 'Observer'  Many of the interviews made me stop what I was doing in order to give my full concentration to what was being said.
