Still feels mild outside at 6 degrees but forecast is downhill to 2 or 3 degrees this afternoon with yellow warning of snow and ice on the roads. I dashed out to the garden to plant two rhododendron cuttings I found in my Xmas bunch of chrysanthemums and the stems pushed easily into the ground. Warm ground and icy rain is the mixture needed for thundersnow so we shall see. In all the 53 years I have been tending this garden we have never had thundersnow!
Marion, I don't think we have heard of thundersnow until this week!
Your hellebores are much further on than most of mine
I power washed the patio yesterday and may get some gardening done today depending on whether snow arrives. At least it's kinder to the plants than a severe frost.
Still raining here but getting colder. The first few buds have opened on my prepared hyacinths and they are perfuming the kitchen beautifully. They are a heritage variety, Jan Bos.
Hello Marion! My computer has been on the blink, so this is the first opportunity I've had to catch up with your new thread. Lovely to see things flowering in Bristol.
Having said that, we do have a witch hazel newly opened - Hamamelis 'Arnold Promise'. It wasn't open last week so perhaps it responds to the lengthening days. It's a beautiful clear yellow, though I can't detect much perfume; the winter-flowering honeysuckle makes up for it, though.
It looks as if we'll all need to wrap up warm in the next few days!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Yes Liriodendron, winter is well and truly here. We have a covering of snow in Bristol this morning. Still only 1 degree so very icy. As it is forecast to only reach 5 degrees I will not be venturing outside. The heater is on in the conservatory where my pelargoniums are making a brave show.

My piggy seems to have been enjoying himself wallowing in the mud!
