Yes, Joyce, I'm hoping March is, at least, not too blowy.  Rain wouldn't be so bad!  I have to build one of those heavyweight plastic storage shed things for bins, and comments on line suggest you need a non-windy day or the constituent parts blow away!  I'd build it indoors but it wouldn't fit through the back door.  Perhaps I should take a tent and build it inside there...

Sounds like a plan.  Is there no-one who can help?  More hands, light work etc?  They could at least hold it down for you.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that OH and I should build stuff here rather than get it all done - pergolas, trellises etc but he's not keen.  Hoping the estimates will convince him.

Obelixx, I thought your OH wasn't too handy in the DIY department????

Think the pergola might be better left to skilled hands and no doubt you could manage some of the other stuff with OH passing the tools. . . .

Obelixx, I might be able to call on a neighbour for the tricky bits.  And if I'm really stuck, there's a handyman around who might be glad of a small job; I hate to have to ask for help though!

Obelixx - I can imagine what my OH would say if I suggested he help me build fences, pergolas etc - and I can't repeat it on here image. He does help with occasional tasks around the garden (usually ones that require muscle rather than skill) and he does basic DIY around the house. Beyond that he reckons he goes to work to pay for somebody who has the skill and tools to come and do a better job in about a tenth of the time.

But it is tempting to ask when the costs start mounting... image

Lovely day here - positively spring like in a sheltered spotimage

Welcome back, Lily P, glad you had a good visit and the first smile image I hadn't read back when I posted earlier.

Have been booking ferry tickets for our visit in May. Got in a muddle as the little calendar on the website was too high up so it  didn't show the month, but I saw it was Sunday 30th so clicked, thinking April - but July has a Sunday 30th too image then didn't notice when I read it through. Had to ring them to change it.

We will be going to Norfolk, then the Malvern Spring Show with our friends there, who I met some years ago on the forum!

Take some pennies and a basket or three Busy.  When I went there was a man selling very cheap wee clematis.......   Love Malvern show but it's very close to OH's spring golf weekend.  Might have to take turns as we can stay with rellies at Upton and save on B&B or hotels so I'd have more spending money.

OH and I have built fences in the past and trellis but not pergolas.  He's agin it here because we had so much rain in 2015 followed by strong winds that every single post and panel ended up at 45° because the soil was too wet to hold the concrete boots.   Ended up having to buttress the lot.  Wouldn't happen here.

How hard can it be to build a pergola if you have a mitre saw and a spirit level and a drill and screwdriver?   He's happy to be the labourer usually.  Just needs reminding but first I'll let the money talk.
