  • Afternoon all!

That's an interesting idea, Topbird... might not be universally popular though...  image

Just put a Simnel cake in the oven.  (Mmmm... marzipan!  image)  Yes, I know it's supposed to be for Easter, but it's our favourite cake, and we just might be glad of it when we get back from Ireland.

Best wishes to all with birthdays this week.  image image image  I quite like the Queen's idea - have an official birthday too, at a more suitable time of year.  image

That's a classy tree, Chicky.  I like the "warm white" lights - OH and I disagree about this, but I think plain lights are more restful.  We have friends from east Germany, who have real candles on their (real) tree... it looks beautiful, but they have to keep a fire extinguisher behind the sofa!

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Happy birthday to Doves OH and Fidgets OH and Pats son, hope everyone has an enjoyable birthday that doesn't get blended with Christmas in any way!

Greetings and best wishes to all, will read back when I'm nearly human/womble image x

Liri, no need to worry about a simnel  cake being just for Easter as I saw hot cross buns in Morrisons earlierimage (I love them though).  I've just put a mincemeat cake in the oven and that is just beginning to perfume the airimage.

Topbird I will join your campaign for no nooky in March - any more months in mind?imageimage.  Glad your OH got home safe and sound and that he's making good inroads into his list

Fidget I hope your hog will be left in peace now he/she is sheltered and fed.  I must admit to doing a double-take, thinking you meant the hedgehog was a bengal (never heard of themimage).  Note to self, do not partake of sherry and mince pie in the afternoon. Good luck and a happy birthday to OH (and his twin).  Fairy, you didn't let me down with your commentimage.

Chicky the tree is gorgeousimage.  Enjoy your meal and the city lightsimage.  Hopefully Dove will come home to tell us all about their day at the seasideimage.

Wonky I just saw your post and, though I'm glad you're a bit better, it must be too soon to return to work.  Look after yourself for goodness sakeimage.

I agree Wonky.  pace yourself or you'll collapse in a horrible heap just when you need to be on form.

Fidget - good moves with the wee hedgepig but be prepared to put food out for a few days to keep it safe from cold.   I have no idea if we have them here.  I do hope so.   The neighbours tell me we have coypu and foxes that pass through the gardens at night and there are wild boar and roe deer in the nearby woods.   Not seen any but we did meet a very surprised large rabbit which jumped out of a hedge right in front of us on walkies.  Scamped straight back again before the dogs even saw it!

Topbird - good idea. My b'day is 23/11 but my maternal relatives always gave me a joint prezzie for that and Xmas.  OH's is 7/12 and his family would do joint prezzies for him so we now do a decent prezzie for b'day and a small or shared one for Xmas.   Before we had Possum we spent years with a £10 limit for our Xmas prezzie and that worked really well.

No simnel cake here or icing on the Xmas cake.  Neither of us likes marzipan although we love almonds and frangipane.

I have done my last bit of planting for now - a few dwarf dianthus and the last of the bulbs I rescued from tubs I had in Belgium.  Yesterday it was hemerocallis and potentillas and sages along with bulbs.  However, the soil is so dry that I shall have to put the sprinkler on tomorrow morning to give the two beds a good soak or the bulbs will shrivel.

Now to chop fruit for the Creole cake.  Bit late but I had to hunt for dried apricots!  It won't get baked now till Boxing Day..........

Hi everyone out there.  Cheers to those with something to celebrate and cheers to those of us who are just getting on with work/chores/Xmas prep etc.

Went out to buy my Xmas pressie to myself - some new headphones, as mine mysteriously stopped working last night. I seriously couldn't go to sleep without them as I like to listen to a podcast or programme before slumber. Unfortunately, the ones I choose did not have the essential volume control on the wire I wanted (despite a misleading picture and review in the 'catalogue') so I am glad I checked before gifting them to myself! I'll have to do a Santa-dash back to the shop one evening after work now - nightmare!

Liri: I've just come online to dig out my seminal cake receipe as I taste tested my first gluten free dairy free fun free Christmas cake....BLEUGH. It has not turned out well.

So I was going to wipe up my favourite seminal instead.

    Great minds etc.
