The cathedrals are not national monuments paid for by public funding from taxes tho I dare say they get some, somewhere. I like to visit churches and cathedrals because they show the product of the labour and skills and management and ambitions of the people who built them. I love the architecture and stone work and stained glass and wood carving but have to admit most of the painted art leaves me cold.
Even so, £20 is too steep.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
£20 each admission is much too steep for a family to pay (even with a reduction for children). Thus many people are deprived of seeing the beauty of these old buildings. No doubt the guide books will be fairly expensive too.
Thank you GWRS - we've had a lovely day. Regent St lights are pretty good & there are some nice shop windows.
Have to agree with the comments about the cost of Abbey admission - pretty steep & discouraging to anyone on a tight budget. Also not allowed to visit the shrine (too fragile for general sight seeing), not allowed to take photos and quite a few of the really old pieces I would have liked to look at more closely were roped off. And the museum is closed...
Yes, it's a unique piece of our heritage but I felt a bit cheated & other cathedrals do it all better. Still - I can now tick it off the bucket list & the stewards were friendly & helpful.
V&A tomorrow & that's a freebie & includes a couple of tours - swings & roundabouts
Very cold out there now - keep warm everyone

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
Sounds like a great trip Tbird - enjoy the V&A .....let me know if Kylie's hotpants are still there
I went to Westminster Abbey after the Kate/William nuptials ......it was free entry for a week, and I was working across theroad from there at the time .....remember the field maples lining the aisles. Think Prince Charles now has them in his garden???
Should be another sparkler of a day today - yesterday was just gorgeous☀️❄️☀️❄️☀️ Love a sharp, cold and sunny day, so long as I am bundled up in a BIG scarf
Good morning Sunny and very cold out there. Sparkling white stuff all over everything and dog walkers with woolly hats, mittens and plumes of steam around their heads.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Not been to a museum for ages, think the Turner exhibition was the last one. I understand why they charge for special events but I do think normal entrance fees should be the same in all museums.
Have been tidying the garden, and disturbed a hedgehog on the weekend, went to check him yesterday and he s gone. Fingers crossed he has found a new bed, it's not frosty so hoping he will be ok. He is in the walled garden and I never even knew he was there!
Daughter is 40 today (a St Andrews day baby) How did that happen?
have a good day everyone, the chaos all starts tomorrow

Morning all, it's looking really pretty outside with the surrounding woods and fields covered in a light dusting of frost, feel sorry for the poor horses though!
Plan for today is to post the last batch of xmas cards and maybe hand deliver the few that I do. Haircut and then dust of the cobwebs in the dining room and get it spruced up for Christmas........only use it when all the family are down, as it feels too empty with just the two of us sitting at a 10 placed table.
Too cold for pottering in the garden today but will check on the greenhouse, cold frame and the fleeced up plants.
I think my horses are happier in the frost than in midsummer when they are covered with flies! They have their winter coats, and a field shelter full of hay.
It's sunny so I expect I'll be gardening this afternoon when it warms up a bit.
If the Westminster Abbey money goes to the Queen then who pays for the huge upkeep? The Queen or the State?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Oooooh! We haven't written ours yet - better get started ...
the other job I need to get on with is to give all the silver a good polish. Most of it stays in the sideboard except at Christmas - it looks lovely reflecting the Christmas lights.
Oh and I must make jam from most of the raspberries in the freezer to free up some space to freeze Christmas stuff.

Top bird , you would think that Westminster Abbey would free , like the Museums as it is a National monument
I know it costs a lot of money to maintain Cathedrals but 20 seems a bit steep
Any way I hope you are enjoying London

Good morning, much milder here this week.
