It's amazing the difference in the soil after taking that ash tree down in the north/east corner of the garden last winter. The veg garden cropped much much better (more light on the plants and more moisture in the soil).
Another change is that whereas in the past, as soon as the rain stopped I could get out there and plant things, now, after all the organic matter we dug in to try to improve the soil over the past few years it's really holding the moisture - there's no chance of raking the bed down and sowing the broad beans today after the rain last night.
Never mind - the house is tidy (ish) and the ir*ning is done and put away - I shall find an enjoyable way of whiling away the day - surfing the websites lusting after kniphofias maybe? At the moment I want all of these https://www.woottensplants.com/product-category/plantlist/kniphofia/
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I'd like the two pale ones Dove - Little Maid and Percy's Pride, and also Bee's Lemon so if you can just add those for me when you're ordering....
I always wanted Bee's Lemon and Little Maid for another garden but never got them. Didn't see them at the nursery yesterday, although they do stock them, so I may have to wait till next year....
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I'm still in 2 minds about kniphofias. The ones I see in catalogues and on telly look great but when I see them in gardens they always look to be all leaf and little flower.
OH has fixed the freezer that died using the spare part delivered to the paper shop in Mouthiers. Now he's fixing the bathroom basin which has sprung a leak after I decided the tap was at the wrong angle and moved it round a bit........
We have a largish broken ash tree that needs cutting down cos it has a huge broken branch and is in the wrong place plus a plum tree that is more or less dead and another that needs an expert tickle but that last can wait till spring when we see what's still alive on it. We have found a kiwi vine entwined with the grape so they'll need some research so I can sort them out.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Phone repair man/electrician came this morning. He's replaced a white plastic box, added another, changed some wires, done something in the cellar and tested all 6 phone sockets. Hopefully now Internet will work better.
OH is singing in a concert later this afternoon. I'll go and watch him. Hopefully be back in time for Strictly.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Just had a phone call from Wonky - her step-daughter visiting from Brighton (and now a qualified teacher with a fiancé and a driving licence  ) loves the last jumper that I knitted for DD, and if she gets the wool will I knit one for her too? ........... Of course I will ...
Oh, and there's a boiled fruit cake in the oven - don't let me forget to check it will you - it's in a different shaped tin so not overly sure of the time it'll take to cook .........

Any left for me Dove? I've been digging out turf and clay for the path, and shifting hideous heavy slabs, and some fruit cake would fill the gap in my tummy nicely...pretty pretty please
I don't know how well the poker will do here - but I'll put it in the best possible spot and see how it goes. I have some seeds to sow of other things for the bed, so it'll fill a space if nothing else!
I've got bolognese going in the slow cooker and soup made. Definitely soup timeof the year now

Meanwhile, for DD and Charlie, I have put my Vendée Globe photos on an album for easy access, si jamais - http://s211.photobucket.com/user/Obelixx_be/library/1610%20Les%20Sables%20dOlonne?sort=2&page=1 Photos of port, yacht basin, some of the info in the exhibit and the boats themselves.

I suspected that I was already slightly smitten by kniphofias and then I saw this
and realised that it was True Love ....... the problem is that I don't have the same acreage as Bressingham Gardens
Do you think that if I don't see it again for twelve months I'll forget all about them, or will absence make the heart grow fonder?

i think I'm with you on kniphofias Obelixx, leaf to flower ratio isn't great IMHO.
All fallen leaves mown and stacked in " cages" . Cuppa and a bit of carrot cake then start on cannas and hedychiums.
You'll still have the photo.
