Tootles, I have grown sturon for several years, very good crop, good size, and september this year was eating the last of the previous years crop. But courgettes didnt do very well at all, no betroot, never managed to get carrotts growing here no idea why. I did try an autumn planting of onions one year they were no-where near as good.
Thee last three days I have cut back the Raspberry canes and taken out some more of the finished summer bedding plants. aerated the front lawn and started the back lawn. My wife linda has been buy planting her pots ready for the spring. Colour is gradualy diminishing in the garden I will soon be cutting back all the perenials.
We cant make out if our rasperries are summer or autumn, because they have been fruiting for months, so worried about cutting back incorrectly. Did a bit of tidying up, planted a few more bulbs. Hubby made an arch, sort of Japanese style, with a "path" of grass going through a bed, which we enlarged, sneaked the idea from Sussex Prarie gardens, where you can walk through the grasses. Ours not on such a grand scale of course. Wildflower meadow is still doing well lot of different plants coming into flower. Picked masses of pears, jam and cutney methinks. Had to do some watering of the pots. Put on here suggestions for 3 white concrete pots out the front, thanks for thoughts by the way, we have planted pittosporum ever green that will have scented mauve flowers in the spring.

Just been to allotment this morning put lettues that was growing in trays in compost bin as it was finished
Also put tray of spring onion in g/h
Tootles - Onions need rich but well drained soil, they also need a good dose of potash to firm up & ripen well.
We just manure the beds in autumn and leave for spring sowing. Also had good crop with electric.(onions)
