One more day of work and then it's a week in the garden for me! image  I'm just nipping to the shed to pot up some cabbages myself, GWRS - they can't wait any longer!

I did some work, largely tying in my clematis montana just over the top of our 6ft fence to get it in the right position to go sideways and fill up the gaps in the much reduced leylandii.

This is probably not a recommended  way to do it but I have been tying long stems of the buddleia I cut off when I last pruned it and I have tied some of these stems into the spaces of the leylandii branches to bridge the gaps. I am directing the new shoots up this frame work.  It is not doing too badly considering.

It will start to put out new growth after it has flowered. There is quite a lot of new clematis growth over the top of the trees since the neighbours reduced the tops by about 5ft late last summer.  Work in progress.

Mowed the lawn in the front garden and what's left of the lawn in the back garden (Thanks dog!). Then weeded the borders in the front.

While the front doesn't get the thousands of sycamore seedlings that the back garden gets it seems to be a favourite spot for Ground Elder - absolutely hate the stuff and it's a monotonous pain getting it out. Still, it's all looking much better now and ready for a bit of planting.

  • We did some yesterday, took the rest of the tree clippings that were on the lawn to the tip, came back mowed the lawn at last it was looking rather long. Raked the lawn, filled the holes as well then re-seeded it all as it is mostly moss! Finished trimming the box hedge!! I think that was it safe to say we ached afterwards!

Just did watering today - don't want rain this weekend as plenty of gardening to do but do need my pond and water-butts to fill up. May have to resort to 'treating' tap water to add to the pond. I have a little over-flow part to my pond, which is full of tadpoles, so they will need more water soon as they are growing fast.

After getting very sensible advice about not planting H. petiolaris on my north facing fence on here, and planting clematis instead... I planted a H. petiolaris against my north facing fence. Sorry guys. It was just there at Homebase. I couldn't resist. If I ever need to get at the fence, I'll have to work around it!

I also popped a Trachelospermum against my S. facing fence and fanned some canes out to train it to the wire supports (which I will be putting in this weekend).

Replaced 2 long hoses and shifted over 30 bags of manure and compost from the front of the house to the back.  Did a lot of watering as it's been quite a while since any decent rainfall and lots of things were very dry.  Prepared the runner/climbing bean trench.  Pricked out a few seedlings.

  • Digging out the bog garden with a trowel takes a very long time - but that is what I did this morning.  Also potted on some cherry tomato seedlings.  Spent some time watering pots of daffs that have finished flowering but still have green leaves.

I noticed that one of our apple tree saplings has died, which is a shame - we grew it from seed sown 4 years ago - it was approx 2 foot tall.
