  • Today I was planning a new layout for the imagesmaller granite trough, so far one Geum Cooky (orange flower), 1 Harebell (blue flower), one dianthus (pink I think), and toying with Aquilegia Spring magic of Iceberg.  Not sure if I will stick to this plan - any suggestions please. Not a very close picture, but it is this trough that needs a sort out.

Yesterday I sowed lots of seed, pruned hydrangea and a hypericum androsaemum.

Wish it would dry up a bit so I could cut the grass, it's starting to get out of control, last cut was at the end of Oct.

That's a lovely display G Donkey. I've got aplines in mine. I'm not sure I like that they look quite raggy sometimes but I think that's because I don't know how to prune them correctly.

What lovely hellebores V Sponge. Have they been there for a while?

Ive popped into the greenhouse and it's lovely to see seeds coming up in the heated propogator. I've taken the lids off to slow them down a bit and give them more light.

I want to find a home for some raspberry plants that are still in pots from last year.  I'm going to nip to the garden centre near me that sells off seed potatoes this time of year and various bulbs.

Got some tidying to do too. Lovely day here in Notts so far. Sun is shining and the birds are chirping - bliss.

  • Sounds like you have a busy gardening day Tootles.  The rain has just caused us to come back inside, but have had a productive morning, meeting pond people, discussing the next stage, moving bird tables, bee hotel and preparing pots for dahlia and strawberry plants. So plenty to keep us busy too.

Time to prepare lunch for the hungry workers now.

Been out there in the sunshine this morning.   Have potted on some Hollyhocks (want them to get a bit bigger before putting them in the garden) also some pink and purple wallflowers.  Was a bit late starting them off last year so they might not flower this year but they will be fine  in pots until next year.

Tidied up a few plants that survived the winter in the greenhouse and gave them a little spray of some fungicide.

Have a garden statue that needs moving since taking out some large conifers and have a couple of spots where I need to decide on some planting so will be doing that this afternoon.

    It's poured here, no gardening.

The first of my plants have arrived from Sarah Raven. Lovely geums 'Tangerine Dream', some phlox 'Blue Sensation' and some salvias - hopefully hardy here in Scotland. Salvias never normally last me through a winter but optimism is the gardeners friend! Potted them all on and put them in the greenhouse.

Just counted up the number of plants I have ordered and I am a bit taken aback. I hope not all of them need potted up or I will have to build an extension on to the greenhouse!

shredded the remains of a conifer that Doris took out. Not proper gardeningimage

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • It's maintenance nut - you will no doubt be using the shredded remains for mulching or similar when it has rotted down - that's organic gardening at it's best.  We now shred everything that is "shreddable", and I will be using some of the result in the next few months once all the wood chip from the most recent pine tree has been used up.  The soil is certainly improving from using this.

This afternoon as been blustery, but not unpleasant, so more gardening for us all - preparing small greenhouse for the growing season, planting Dahlia tubers in pots in cold GH ready for putting out when a few inches tall, planting up granite trough with some smaller plants - hopefully the slugs won't find these new tender plants.
